I didn't know where Baja was. I thought that baja was spanish for under, or below.
I checked it out on MapSource and it's actually a town. I tried to map a route to it but there are no connecting roads between thereand Terrace. If we decide to take it in we have to head 23[suP]o[/suP] true, for 8,433 km and we will be in Baja, Hungary.

Seriously though, is Baja a place or a region or what? :ted: And what's a Baja Almanac that eight riders would use?

I'm not being facetious, I really don't know. It's not that I don't know much, it's just that the older I get, the more I find out what I don't know.

Thanks,

I found Baja California on the map, right where I thought it was. I have heard other references to Baja that I didn't think had anyyhing to do with Mexico. I'll pay more attention next time.

The US State of California, is more or less what used to be referred to as "alta" California (Upper) and included the area now known as Colorado, Utah, Arizona & Nevada. It is wholely located in the United States. Formerly Mexican territory, after the Mexican/American war in 1847 it was divided into the upper part for the US and the lower part for Mexico.

The Peninsula of California was referred to as "Baja" California (lower).

The Baja California Peninsula is divided into two states, Baja California Norte (North duh.) and Baja California Sur (South).

An aside:
Some Mexicans hate to hear Baja California referred to as plain "Baja", because of the connotation of "lesser". Its also a two part name like British Columbia or Nova Scotia. Imagine someone tourist coming here and saying they were just out on the east coast in Halifax, Nova. Yup we're heading to Nova! Without the Scotia, it just doesn't sound right. So when talking to Mexicans, its Baja California Norte or Baja California Sur. My Mexican sister in law provided me with this information.

These Boojum trees are only found in this part of the world. Cool huh?

I'm a big fan, can you tell?

Proudman the Baja Almanac is a book of mapsfor Baja California Sur and Baja California Norte. Ithas probably the best and most detailed maps of the Baja.

Thanks for all the feedback on my original question(not) . I am back from Baja and do not need the Almanac anymore. I did manage to buy the Baja (california) Norte but was unable to get a South version. This book is a real help if you want to travel offroad on the less travelled trails. Thanks for the history lesson Paul. The South Almanac would have been more help though.I can see why you're a real fan of Baja.

I am looking to borrow bike fx's Almanac, in exchange for beers! Another rider that I'm going to Baja with in April has also made this request, but probably without the beer bait.

Glad you're back- want to get together to hear the dirt. I've also just bought a Victory and need some paint advice. I can't get enough metal flake! (I'm loathe to change out the duct tape on the KLR though!!)
