Boston Bar/Nahatalatch

Just viewed your report, thanks. We were thinking of running up Nahatlatch soon, so good to see a 1st person update. What surprised me was the block of the road(did I get that right) to the Nahat. Lookout. I have seen webcam shots of numerous vehicles up there this year: http://visiwisp.lyttonnet.com/app/camcon.php What's with that?Saturday we rode from just south of Boston Bar east to Gillis Lake and on to Kingsdale, back via Patchett Rd, Spius Crk FSR, Maka Crk north (or south) rd back onto Murray Lake rd to Murray Lk and then backtracked out to south of Boston Bar. 200 km, mostly FSR. The best sales pitch would mention the fact that we met only two other vehicles and that made up for the FSR. Nice ride, but Maka crk was the most fun.

Unfortunately: Access to Nahatlatch Fire Tower is currently blocked by the owner of Wilderness Ranch. Read more here (FB of 4WDABC): https://www.facebook.com/groups/4wdabc/permalink/10154662353726009/
That's interesting. I own property in the area with an old FSR running through it, and had a very specific conversation with a lawyer about this when I bought. He said that right-of-way cannot be denied on a roadway that was built or maintained using government funding, at any time in it's history. The FS lookout would certainly seem to fall under that category. That said, the same lawyer said I shouldn't hesitate to throw up a gate if I wanted to, and the onus would be on users to challenge it in court if they were really interested in access. If it went to court, I'd lose and access through the gate would have to be provided on demand, but that's enough of a hassle that in many cases users won't bother, they'll just go elsewhere. Hopefully in this case the 4x4 guys that rebuilt the lookout will be interested enough to pursue it and sort it out with the landowner.

It sounds as though they have solid advocacy. It's too important not to fight these types of encroachments. The LAST thing I want to see is a model of lower Van Isle or the US. Public land plays a vital role in R and R for many of us.
