Lucky pics - not too comfortable today. First time with a clutch ;). This will be his third season. We're out of the gravel pits and onto the trails now. Finally.

This was my youngest son earlier this year on a CRF100 ...He still pops the occasional un-intensional wheelie on take off! Lots of fun!! for sure.

Nothing like riding with the kids!

Given that Rekluse clutches sell like lifejackets on the Titanic, why don't beginner bikes come with auto-clutches like they used to? I know it would have taken a day or two out of the process of learning my kids how to run a dirt-bike!

Real men have clutch levers on their bars...;)

I keeeed I KEED!!

I think a kid should learn with a clutch. That 110 was the next step up from an auto.
I still remember getting my first clutch bike....I HATED IT !
It took quite a while for me to get the hang of it as a kid but then loved it.

Although...I can still be seen stalling it once in a while:))):

They still do. Both my guys started on a PW50 full auto no clutch no gears. After that we stepped up to a CRF70, three gears for shifting but no clutch required to shift. The oldest now rides a CRF100 five speed with a real clutch. Same as Randual's kid, sometimes he lets the clutch out smoothly but most times he pops a small wheely.

Dorky, my guys are probably going to need new pants again this years. I see that your guy is jeans. Shoot me a pm if you need some and I'll see what we have for spare pants to pass onto Dorky Jr.! Might have a chest/torso protector for him too.

I guess I started my kids late. The first bike I bought for them was a CRF230. What a tank. My daughter turned out to be the most enthusiastic of the two, my son is incredibly risk adverse, and never really had fun with it. A couple of "flying W's" that knocked the wind out of him early on didn't help either.

I hope by starting them early they will be more confident and more aware of their limitations. We'll see. Both boys started on 50s with auto clutches but I agree with Joker - I think a manual clutch is part of the learning process. Maybe better to get it over with early? I told my older one he can have a Rekluse when he can afford to buy one (he's 9 ☺☺:D).

How old are your kids Dave?

We should discuss this Ger. That would be awesome - thanks! Joker gave me some of Connor's old pants which is great but they are still a year or three from fitting those. I'll call you.

My daughter is 22, and my little man (6'3", 210 lbs) is 19. Both are living in Victoria, going to UVIC, no time for riding with the old man any more :(.

The upside is that we have way more freedom to hop on the the GS and do weekend tours with that nut-bar from Vernon and his extremely brave wife. ;)

My son (now 39) got an XR100 at nine as his first bike and learned the clutch fairly quickly. After a few bikes, when he turned 16, he got into an S10 pickup and drove the clutch like he'd been doing it for years.
