Has anyone tried the Mitas Rockrider?

Hey All,

I just spoke with Collin at MX1 about tires for my 690. I did buy a set of Mitas E09 Dakars from him about 2 years ago for a UT trip. I'm totally happy with them, no complaints.

I was asking him if that's still what he would recommend, mentioned I'm doing WABDR in June, so expecting a lot of mud as there is currently lots of snow on some of the passes.

He suggested that I might be interested in the Mitas Rockrider MC 23 at least for the front. He said there's some local guys using them, a few on 690's. Just wondering if that's anyone here and if someone has some feedback on them.

Thanks,

Cord

Hi Cord,
Sorry i haven't tried them. I have been using the Pirelli mt-21 Rally cross series on my 690 and while they perform great the rear doesn't last long so its time for a new one how was the life on the Mitas E09 Dakars.
Mark what about the matching Mitas C18 yellow stripe on the rear have you tried that yet? what are you using on the rear a 606?

I've actually been demoing the Sava rockrider rear, which is a great long lasting DS tire, just not as aggressive as I'd like - its quite firm, and hence doesnt (re)shape well at lower pressures.

My go to rear tire for the 690/990 is the Pirelli Scorpion Rally, or Dunlop 908.
However, I'm all out of fresh meat, so a C-18 is on the menu !

Thanks, guys.

Razor - I'm happy with the E09's and was ready to just go for another pair but called MX1 just to pick Collin's brain and see if there's anything new. Unfortunately, my bike and I have been in the dirt for about 18 months, so I thought it was worth the ask to see if he had some other gems. He's still quite big on the E09's and it's possible I'll still go with that. I think my rear still has enough tread on it, not sure about the front.

As for a review - I'm happy with the wear of them but sorry, I don't recall the mileage I put on them. I went from the Kenda 270's to this and I feel that I gained in every spot - on and off road. I put them on for one local DS ride and then did about 9 days in UT on every type of terrain. At no time did I think 'this would have been so much better with 'X' tire'.

Mark - that Stone Eater pattern looks like it will rattle out my fillings on the highway. But I do value your judgement so I may give it a try. Clearly this means we need to get our 690's out to Triangle soon.

No issues at high speeds , and an aggressive front wont wash out.
Re a t-beach tear - just say when !

Hi Cord,
I just ordered a set of the Rockriders from Colin so I'll post a review once they are on. The first real test will be the Tourtech Rally at the end of the month are you going?

My test rear is nearing the end of life, and has become woefully dysfunctional. While this tire may be adequate for some, there are many vastly superior options.

I'll be sticking with my top 3, which in my experience are THE best aggressive dual sport rear tires:
- Pirelli Scorpion Rally: http://www.pirelli.com/tyre/ww/en/motorcycle/sheet/scorpion_rally.html
- Dunlop 908: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tire-catalog/off-road-adventure/dual-sport-adventure/d908-rr/
- Michelin Desert: http://moto.michelin.com/tyres/michelin-desert-race

offworlder, can you comment on the price of the rockrider rear? just noticing that 2 out of your 3 favourites (i'm not sure the pricing on the scorpion rally) are damn close to 200-2fiddy bucks a piece. thats all good if they last and work and give good value. but if the rockrider is say 1/2 price and lasts 1/2 as long, other than the time to flip another tire, i would call it a wash?

While the rockrider is cheap, as mentioned, it dont compare re performance. For me, performance is #1, as it makes such a huge diff being able to actually control the bike :p. For lighter bikes, might not be as much of an issue, but when the 690 or 990 cant get up a hill, or are sliding out of control, the last thing on my mind is price.

The Michelin Desert is crazy expensive - but there's a reason its used by many (most) of the Dakar riders....

i see where your coming from! a 500 cc dualsport is way easier to spin and take another run at something. A 690, much less a loaded 990 spinning out on a climb or sliding through a corner, is a whole different ball game. Thank you for clarifying your decisions.

Have you tired any of the Mita tires?
I had a Dakar E-07 on my 990 for 2,000 kms in Baja last month, hardly any wear and I was 85% on the slab.
Just threw on a Dakar E-09 to play with, we'll see how it does doing 75% slab locally and at the loose screw in August. ;)
