New OHV laws - do you want plates or stickers?

I just got a note from Peter Sprague - BCORMA about government wants us to have metal license plates. I would rather have stickers. BCORMA would rather us have stickers too.

If you feel the same way, can you please send an email to your MLA?

Here is the MLA finder, which will give you their email address: http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm

Below is a copy of the email I sent. Copy it, rewrite it, do whatever you want to it. Make sure to include your name and address to give it legitimacy.

Please dont let this thread turn into a bitch session or a debate. If you dont agree with the OHV laws - use the other thread. If you dont want plates, please send an email to your MLA.

Hello XXXXXXXX,

Are you aware of the new Bill 13, the Off Road Vehicle Act? It reached royal assent on March 24 this year. The Government and the OHV users (BCORMA) are now working out final details on how to implement this bill.

One issue is how to identify OHV vehicles. I understand the government is favouring metal license plates. However we, the OHV users (BCORMA) are strongly urging permit stickers. Why do we not want metal license plates? Because metal license plates on off-road vehicles will invariably be bent, broken, dented, torn off while off-road riding. The metal license plates do not last and often have to be replaced. We know this from experience, as many BC OHV users have "dual sport" dirt bikes which are street legal, but can be used off road. We are constantly repairing or replacing lost license plates. Many states and provinces have also experienced this issue and favour the off road sticker.

Also, these license plates do not fit well on smaller OHVs for kids. The metal edges of the license plates are a safety hazard and could cause injury.

Can you please express my views to the Ministry responsible?

Thank you

Alberta has smaller metal plates than we do I believe and they usually zip-tie them in their front wheels or mount them vertically on the tail.

thanks OW! I have corrected the mistake. And added a little phrase about license plates cutting off little kiddies limbs...

Interesting

Funny that BCORMA has decided to make this the issue they want to take a stand on????

I wonder what happened to the great cone of silence that shrouded the JAG? The gag rule that Ken M told us they were all bound by?

Personally I don't think this is the make or break issue for registration, who really cares about having to put a plate on you machine? Do we even have the details of how this plate is to be attached or are we all just jumping on the bandwagon? Certainly I would prefer a decal or plastic plate but I dont really care.

Lets pick our battles carefully. If I am to join in any battle I would like to know the details first, so show me the details. Where does this plate need to be mounted or just it just need to be mounted anywhere on the machine? I don't think any of these decisions have been made public yet, perhaps BCORMA is giving us the heads up?

I do however think that having to register a small kids bike or quad is a major issue and one that will decrease our numbers immediately and in the future.

I have to agree with Tom on this, lets pick our battles. Personally I think a Plate make sense. It's funny how BCORMA wants our help now.

Hey don't shoot the messenger - I got this from Peter Sprague on a BCORMA facebook posting. He is wanting everyone to spread the word and email our MLAs.

If you have concerns about it being the right battle or not, I suggest talking to him rather than airing on this forum.

Not shooting the messenger here, just posting my thoughts. Myself and others (including you) have been asking BCORMA for answers for quite some time. I just find it unusual that now we all are to contact our MLA, while for months we have been asking questions and not getting any response. We had the President of BCORMA at the Loose Screw just a few days ago and he said nothing, all was good and there was nothing that we could not live with regarding registration?

I am just confused, BCORMA spent the last few months pretty much silent and now sending out a "Call to arms":gaah:

In fact the BCORMA site only has a "tweet" regarding this registration issue nothing else, no other information.

DC its good that you posted this, just not so good that we cant find any more information

I guess that the question is; what is BCORMA fighting and what are they letting go without a fight. And good for you for posting DirtClunker, but Threads never go the way you want them to.

I have to laugh at this "The metal edges of the license plates are a safety hazard and could cause injury." your riding a Motorcycle. :D
