Routledge Wrap-Up

The 54th annual Routledge Run is now in the books. By all accounts it was a success and participants had a great time.

We had 20 riders start-out on the 'hard' D/S course. Tom & I had some trouble remembering the route initially, but by lunch-time our group was finding it's groove.

  • Thanks to Tom for undertaking the monumental task (immediately following the Dead Zone) of putting together this ride. Bren, Neil & I helped; but this was Tom's vision and as usual he provided a terrific ride.
  • Thx to Bren & Mike for acting as sweepers / providing rider assistance along the way.
  • No injuries to report:tup:
15+ riders joined Doug on the 'adventure' D/S route. Reportsare that it was a fantastic day, with challenges, viewpoints and length to keep everyone entertained. Jay from Seattle completed the route on his GS1200 without tipping-over, so either he is a brilliant rider or the difficulty Doug set for this course was spot-on (perhaps both are true?).

  • Thanks to Doug for putting this ride together. When we first started talking about taking on the organization of the 2008 Routledge, he immediateley started pulling out the maps and talking to others that knew the area. There are so many trails and good stuff in that region that the real challenge for Doug proved to be deciding what to keep and making it the right length (with fuel / food stops). I believe that this is the first D/S ride that he has captained... Very well done.
  • Doug had help from Uncle Rod, Ian, John J and Sheldon in the pre-ride phase. Dwight & Steve rode the course on Friday to deal with windfall from the recent storms, and I understand that John V provided much assistance and was invaluable on Saturday as ride-sweeper. Thx to all of you.
  • A few broken bikes, but no injuries to report:clap:
About 20 riders rode the street course that we dreamt-up. They followed many of the infamous SBW roads north of Keremeos before dropping into Osoyoos. Most lunched in Rock Creek after ridingsome of the best curves in the province. (The Beaverdell Hotel was unable to serve lunch...)

  • These riders came back to the campground looking tired and hot, with big smiles on their faces from a fine day in the saddle.
  • No injuries (or tickets) to report:dr:
The event format worked really well. Our accomodations / set-up at the Castle Resort were surprisingly good, as was the catered meal from Santo's on Saturday night.

  • Tom put onmovies for us while we socialized Friday & Saturday night.
  • Donna (GVMC president) and her helpers (Irene, Ron, Pat) cooked us a terrific breakfast both Saturday and Sunday, and sent the 'hard' D/S riders out on the course with terrific lunches.
  • Marq of Western Powersports (Langley) has been a long-time supporter of both the GVMC and DSBC, and usually supports this particular event. They funded our souvenir this year; thanks to Doug / Minuteman Press for making all the arrangements for these first aid kits.
  • Mike of Pacific Yamaha-BMW (Richmond) funded our T-shirts this year. Thanks to Ginger for the design work and Judy for making all of the arrangements. Both the shirt color and artwork proved very popular.
  • Colin of Northstar Motosport (National)and Bill at 5th Gear (Richmond)also supported us with some terrific raffle prizes.
My sincere thanks go to all of you that participated / supported / helped us make this an event a success. Please post up your own stories and pictures.

The Routledge Run (2004?) was my introduction to the Greater Vancouver Motorcycle Club. If you met some people you liked and/or think that you'd like to be a part of this 86 year old institution, then please pm one of us (Tom, Sharon, Judy, Doug, John J, Neil, etc. etc. are members) or better yet come down to the clubhouse - we meet every Tuesday night.

In his typical efficient style, Mark has provided an excellent role-call above, of those deserving a big thanks for their efforts in making this event happen. Thank you to all of you for the logistics and accomodation, I thought the Castle resort campground was a perfect setting. Thanks also for the sponser support, all the food prep and tasty cold beverage provisioning, and the great comraderie on the trail.

Mark, you're a gracious host, and you've done an outstanding job of organizing this ride. Well done

Tom, Mike and Bren, thanks for guiding us up the Badger and through the Whipsaw -- at moments through the morning 'un-ride', it must have felt a bit like herding cats as riders shot off in every direction in search of a 'way out'.

This picture sums up the morning:

And this one sums up the afternoon :ss::tup:

Routledge Run 2008 was Fantastic.

Thanks to Markfor putting this together. There's a lot that goes into making an event like this successful.Youhave to please the Dualsport riders and the Road riders and everyone this past weekend was pleased. All3 routes were great.

I rode the Dualsport Adventure route. It was 250+ kms on some of the most scenic backroads, gravel roads, jeep trails and quad trails that the area has to offer. Doug (printerboy) put a lot of time and effort into making the Adventure route scenic, fun and in some sections, challenging.

We rode a figure 8 course that started in Princeton and went SE then NE up to Hedley then NE up the back side of Apex. Then S to Keremeos. From there we went NWon this great off rode route that was south of the main hwy back to Hedley. Then onto the Old Hedley Hwyback to Princeton. :dr:

Doug (printerboy) guided our group of 8 riders and he was awesome.

The Princeton Castle Resort was a beautiful place to stay and a great staging area for this event

Where else but at the Routledge Run would you find a KLR, a BMW 1200K and a Honda CRF 450X all participating in the same event? Each having a course designed specifically for them to ride.

These were some of the other bikes:

Thank you again Pacific Yamaha BMW for sponsoring another event.

Mike is trying to explain to Beemer why he has to stay behind (I think)

Our leader, Doug, as we prepare to start our Adventure

I'm ready

Some beautiful scenic areas

We had a couple of bike problems but with some teamwork this KLR made it out.

We stopped for lunch at the Twin Lakes Golf Course

The KLR got pulled into Keremeos where it was later picked up and brought back to camp

Near the end of the day we stopped along the river for a break in a field FULL of grasshoppers. The river was so inviting I wading in to wash off the dust and cool down. It was simply beautiful.

After 10 hours of being out on the course we finally made our way back to camp for a spectacular feast. Then it was time to sit back and listen to the stories.

It was agreat day.

Tom -- thanks for posting that gdb file, loaded into my MapSource no problem. I appreciate it since I opted to leave my garmin at home this ride -- probably a good choice considering I lost the mirror beside my RAM mount during the T-bone incident.

Could not have asked for better weather or friends to ride with. It was nice to see so many riders who have become such fast friends.

Hello from the BMW R1200GS rider. I had a great time and glad I visited.Hats off to Doug as that wasa great adventure route with plenty of challenges for a big bike. I have showed many of my friends who ride similar bikes this trip and all want to join in next year.I hope tobring up 2 other BMW R1200GS, 1 R1200GSA, 1 DL1000, and a Cagiva Gran Canyon 900cc.

Consider a similar route forand don't forgetus big bike DS riders for next year. And thank you again for a great ride.

Jay,

It was great having you out for the ride, and I'm sorry that you couldn't stay for the extra night. We welcome you and your friends for next year.

I will probably not be involved with the organization of the ridenext year, but I do hope to be involved in setting up the route, with the intention of keeping the skill level similar to this year's ride.

Would like to really thank every one who helped me out (and waited for me) with my somewhat undependable Husky. Bills working on it now.

This was a great character building ride. Thanks to everyone for their hard work putting on this event.

Looking forward to the next ride, Glen

Thanks again for a great event. On another note, my new Huskys problems seem to have been self created by myself with greatly over spraying the air filter causeing it to run rich as hell and overheat.

Also Bill pulled out the factory throttle stop which kept me at half throttle.... I am having some fun now.

see at the next ride Glen
