Okay here's the latest on the SBW Dakar ride.
Direct from the source.

Hi Owen.....
This weekend (june25/26) I was in Oliver and did a little pre-riding.
I would say that I got 50% of it nailed down for sure and the other half is close.
Just have to do a little more exploring to link some stuff together.
More than half the ride will be dirt, nothing extreme but should be challenging for a beginner and fun for an expert!! Whaaa Hooooo!!!
Little glitch with one section cause about a half click goes through a farmers property.
I spoke with him and there is no way we are going through so I have to find a way around or change that bit!!! I'll keep you posted! Should total about 300km as I had hoped.
I think 5-6 hrs depending on the riders 7hrs tops!! I would like to have a riders meeting at 8:45am Saturday morning and everyone fueled up and ready to go at 9:00am sharp.
Good dualsport tires or knobby's recommended. Should see a little of almost everything except snow, lol.
Talk to ya later, Chris.

AUG.8 UPDATE:

[/i][/u]Hello again everyone......

Ok, this is the latest! Went back to Oliver this past weekend (aug.6-7) and did a little more route prep. Found the trail That I was looking for to make a second "A-B" section and also a better section for the "C" riders in the morning section of the ride. It will be apox. 160km to Penticton for lunch and should take no more than 4 hours. I think everyone will enjoys this bit, there is only about20kms of pavement the rest is dirt.

The afternoon is mostly pavement but there is about 30kms of dirt in the middle. The afternoon section is aprox. 100km so the whole route is a little over 250kms. Beready to get down and dirty cause there will be some dust, its dry out there!

See ya there!! :D

AUG.13 UPDATE:

So far the Dakar ride will not be changed. The fire in Oliver has raised some concern but I have some back up plans. I will be in Oliver a few days prior to the ride and will make any changes at that time if needed.

Tickets are going fast so if you want to attend please get to http://www.sportbikewest.com and purchase your tickets ASAP!!!

ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO!!!!

Any chance of getting a Garmin GPS file?

If it is as dusty as I think it is going to be, I would rather follow a mile or two back. The GPS route would keep me from losing the group. A whole bunch of bikes is going to make quite a cloud of crud. :p

Besides I just paid a bunch of $$ for this GPS and I want to make it pay for itself...

Sounds like an awesome ride.

Is there any news on the fire, does the route go towards the fire at all? I know it's SW of Oliver, but would it interfere with the ride?

Sorry .....I won't have any GPS file for ya. I use a Magellan for starters plus I have not rode the whole thing with the gps yet, only small sections. I expect everyone to spread out because of the dust but we won't be making any changes in road/trail without making sure everyone is there. We won't leave ya behind!! See ya there!!

At the moment I'm riding a KTM 950 (without the crash bars, because they are backordered) with the stock Scorpions. Is your "C" ride suitable for a monster like that? :)

I like the bike in the dirt, but at $1,200 plus per side for the gas tanks if dropped, I need to keep to pretty decent dirt roads. I'm not into log crossings with a 500 lb bike. :mad3:

If you like, I could come down for a pre-ride and record the GPS track for you. I'll bet there are others who would like it.

Yes...The fire is a major concern right now. The fire is a few kms out of Oliver to the east on the McKinney Camp Road. The "A-B" riders only ride a few kms of that road but way farther up to join some other roads/trails. With any luck it will be contained and we will still get around. The "C" route is a different story.....The original route for the "C" riders goes right up the McKinney road to join the "A-B" riders. This may have to change. I have some back up ideas and will be watching the progress of the fire very closely. I would like to give a better answer but I probably won't know the exact routes until the Friday before the ride. I will be there a few days before to confirm everything and make the needed changes.

SEE YA THERE!!!

Hey DJ

I will be arriving on the wednesday (aug.24). Due to the fire I am not sure if I will have to change any of the route or not. If you are there early and want to map some of the "C" loop that is fine with me.

I don't have any idea of your riding skills but the "C" loop should be no problem for ya. It has a little bit of challenging stuff but pretty minor and only for a short distance. As long as your tires are in good shape (not bald) they should be fine. I ride a KLR650 and have rode all parts of the route including the "A-B" stuff with a couple of 20 litre aluminum boxes and all my camping gear.

SEE YA THERE!!!

HI EVERYONE....

having a small problem with the updates, seem to lose info after I enter new stuff?! I will post it like this for now.

FIRE UPDATE: Aug 16/05

The bc forest service site has listed the Oliver fire as 100% contained this morning. This is great news for us, now we can run the original route that I had set up. A little rain would even help a little more!!

See everyone there!!

Aug.29 Update:

Well.....I think the ride was liked by everyone that attended. A couple of mishaps but nothing real bad, a few bumps, bruises and scrapes. The cold beer at the end of a hot sweaty day might have got me a few extra points!!! I would have liked to have had a few more riders show up but the smaller group was good. As soon as I can get some pictures together I will post them.

Thanx to everyone that showed up. I really enjoyed riding with you and look forward to doing it again.

Don't forget to check out the websites for pics of this ride and possible news of other rides n' stuff http://www.sportbikewest.com, http://groups.msn.com/KamloopsDual-sportridersand of course this site. CHEERS :hb:

Oh man!

I think I finally got all the dust out of my nose.

Chris, you did an excellent job! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. An excellent route for both the experienced (fast) riders, and the lesser adventurous (me). A couple of scrapes, a wee bit of broken plastic, but I think it was worth it.

I will try and make it out for more rides, and get a bit more comfortable on the machine. But next time, lets try and stay away from the "open range" stuff. Although I do know what to do in the event of a bull!

Thanks, and I'll try and stay in touch.
