Great rack! A buddy got one for his CRF (CFR?) :? 230. Mounts very securely to the subframe. He hasn'tvoiced any complaints. :hb:

I have the pro moto billet rack and it suits my needs. http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=6262&sort=1&cat=598&page=3 If you are doing any hard offroad I wouldn't put any more than 10 - 12 pounds on it. I used to ride a KLR that I could load all the crap I wanted on it. Now I have to be a little more selective about what I take. I ride with a larger back packand strap a dry bag on the rear rack. http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=7107&sort=1&cat=500&page=9

I take the rack offwhen It's not needed because if your doing any hard offroad riding it can smack you in the a** creating a large amount of discomfort. Mine also did not fit the bike very well, and needed some trimming where it mounts to the sub frame.

If your not planning on loading it with a large amount of gear I think it's a good choice. And it seems to be built very well and looks pretty good on the bike. If your going to want to carry more maybe look at these. They look like a pretty sturdy design and have better mount to the sub frame. http://www.turbocity.com/default.php?cPath=69_73&osCsid=1cdc41fe5f4b0fdd442c084bb3133dc4 The only problem with the turbo cityproduct is that there isn't a lot of info about it on the internet.

I have one of the turbocity racks on my XR. I really like it, as it gives a pretty sturdy mount to the subframe.

xr650r_may_2007.htm

The only thing I have heard is that because of the sub-frame extension under the fender if you were to really load the back end (G-out) there is a chance the tire would hit the extension. I have yet to come close to this.

I had one shipped to me here, all in cost back in may when the exchange rate was not good was around $200.00 CDN I think. (That was with the UPS fees included)

How does the windshield work for you. Would it fit my XRL. Where could I find a good windshield?

Nice pics!

The windshield on my bike (XR650R)is aSpitfire made by Slip Streamer and and was around $70.00 can. It works awesome and you can take it off and on in seconds. I only use it on longer trips to protect from the elements and to reduce the fatigue factor. I don't see why it wouldn't fit on a XRL.

Hi Guys,

I plan to 'tour' around a bit. I was thinking of installing a rack on the backof my XR650R.Are there any ideas, suggestions or advice you would have for me regarding this?

Thanks :)

this is what I am referring to when I say 'rack'

Hi Dualsportbiker,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "touring around a bit" but a sturdy subframe is recommended for anything beyond soft throwovers.

I have recently been reading Lawrence Hacking's(canadian author)new book about his Dakar efforts in 2001. He used a XR650R in the race andgave much credit to his capable machine in seeing him through to the finish. He did mention purchasing a cromoly steel subframe from a company in france to support the weight of extra fuel and equipment. I'll try and dig up the name of the company.

FWIW I think the XR650R could make an excellent touring machine but is let down by it's lightweight (aluminum)subframe meant only to support a rider and nothing else. This is typical of subframes on pure dirtbikes. The above cromoly subframe might overcome this significant touring issue.

A recent trip in Baja saw some of my travelling companions(on pure dirtbikes)suffer complete failures of their subframes using promoto racks. The racks were very likelyloaded beyond recommended capacities. I alsothink it would be virtually impossible, to carry touring amounts of gear on a pure dirtbike, without overloading a promoto rack. I've seen it done over and over.

On my pure dirtbike I limit equipment carried to a set of tank panniers and what I'm prepared to carry on my back. Typically this limits me to hotelling at night.

If touring for you means camping and cooking your own food. An improved subframe or an enormous backpack are in order. I've tried the huge backpack and it sucks.

I think the 650 size bike and more specifically your 650R could make the ultimate all around bike(including touring). As with anything she won't be perfect "right out of the box". Have Fun!

Cheers,

Paul N.

The cromoly subframe described above is manufactured by Durendal. Located in Aix-en-Provence France.

MotoLover,

you can get them here
http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/...rrego_dual_sport_motorcycle_luggage_rack.html

do a search on their website for "turbo city" to see all the variations on the rack, I have purchased from newenough.com before with no issues to Canada, not sure about Europe though.

good luck.

Scotty905, I was looking at your XR650R dash instrumentation set up photo on your gallery. I'm thinking about purchasing an XR. Can you give any details on what you did here and how well it works? Thanks.

The dash plate is just a piece of aluminum that was sheared to the desired shape and then ground smooth. The side edges folded over for appearance (c337b from this site did the shearing and bending for me). I put on a couple of turn signal indicators on it to remind my dumb ass to turn the signal off after turning. The keyed ignition is on the right and a 12 volt cigarette style plug-in is on the left. The top switch is for theheated grips. I had to change the way the Vapor mounted to the plate because it transfered to much vibration to the unit (the vibes caused the vapor not to work properly). The dash is mounted directly to the handle bar mounts.

The dash works well for me so I don't have any complaints. If you'd like anymore info just pm me.

Hi Shane,

I like the SDG seat, it was on the bike since I got it, so I can't compare, but a friend of mine put the same seat on after the stock and likes it. My butt gets sore after a couple of hours. I don't think the seat lowers the seat height at all, I think its the same or a bit taller with it.

spring can't come soon enough....

Have you run across any 600xl's (1984) that have mounted these racks successfully? Thanks for the pics and comments.
