We are just in the proto stages of a KTM 950/990 Adv. Top Rack.

Using a lot of the same features as the F800 GS Top Rack here is what we have so far:

IMG_5031.jpg

IMG_5033.jpg

The features:

-Rotopax direct top mount and top Rotopax L bracket mounting
-Givi Monokey top box direct mounting
-KISS DIY top box mounting. Allows you to mount just about any top box securely and inexpensively using carriage bolts and knobs from the hardware store. Great for Pelican etc.
-plenty of strap slots some optimized for Giant Loop Great Basin and a full perimeter of slots still accessible with 1 gal. Rotopax mounted
-BC made of course :)
-it will be the same black fine textured powder coat

What do you think? Are we missing anything?

I'm also looking for anyone with a Trax top box set up for possible integration of that. I know the front two mounting points are the same as Givi. I just need to find out the dimensions of the other points.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!

Nice looking product and design. I would be quite interested in one especially given the local manufacture. Price be comparable to the one's for the BMW 800?

Have you thought about a skid plate for the KTM ?? I like the looks and price of your BMW 800 skid plate and if you had one for about the same price I would likely give it a shot too as I am going to buy one for my 950 before spring.

Looks like it should work well. I can't tell from the pics but maybe radius the edges of the 3 GL slots to protect the straps? Also how about a quick detach option with a solid section for a griddle at camp? lol

Thanks for the feedback bubba zanetti and triplenickel!

Price will likely be a little less than the F800 GS one. :)

As for the skid plate for the 950/990 Adv. we would like to but unfortunately nothing will be happening with that in the near future. :(
I read good things about the Black Dog ones though...

All of the slots and cut-outs in the Top Rack have rounded corners so it's no problem to run the straps through any of them.

We're talking to Weber about some grill designs...;)

If we don't have the finished product ready for the Moto show at the very least we'll have the proto for your scrutiny.

Any Trax top boxes out there?

Thanks,

Dave

(Also how about a quick detach option with a solid section for a griddle at camp?)
or a nice polished solid section that could stick to an upside down plunger, as a sweet table.

your racks look great! they're clearly multi adaptable and I dare say that if you hovered one over a low zoot KLR you might find that rack is a near slamdunk. (pre 08 at least) I like things that are burly and functional, nice rack.

Thanks for the compliments!

The taper on our Top Rack and the tool box under it kinda throws it off for the KLR (big fan of KLR's by the way...I've put over 140,000 kms on them). However with the adapters I have made for the X-Chall to fit the F8GS rack they can be made to fit other bikes. I was never really for want of anything more of my stock KLR Top Rack are you?

Back onto the KTM's. I'll be trying another proto of the KTM rack with a change over the next few days...

Dave,

I'd like to hear more re the X challenge adaptors. I've your (awesome) tail rack on my F650, is there a kit that'll make it work on the X ?

Yes, I fabbed up a slab of aluminium that's much wider/deeper for a good sized waterproof burly bag. ringed with holes for anywhere strap options.

Hi offworlder!

Thanks for the compliment on the Top Rack! Glad to hear you like it!

The adapters were designed to work if you already have the Touratech Large rear rack on the X. That gives the mounting points for the adapter and the F800/650 GS Top Rack. You remove the TT top rack and use the adapters and the MOD Top Rack:

IMG_3531.jpg

It was originally made for a local and it works perfectly.

Unfortunately you have to have the TT set-up already.

Are you going to the Moto Show?

I'd love to meet you! Booth #805...drop by and say hi!
(haha I just read the DSBC Moto Show thread and it looks like you're helping out there  .... and so we're right next to you! See you there!)

Thanks!

MOD KTM 990 ADV& 950 ADV/SE Top Rack

Back on track here is the latest prototype:

IMG_5282.jpg

Now has mounting points to fit the 950 Super Enduro too!

IMG_5268.jpg

Fits great and contrary to how it looks (wide angle lens) you can remove the seat no problem.

The plan is to have hardware kits available to fit either bike.

We're still working on a couple more details on this one. We'll have the proto at the Moto Show and hopefully production available in February.

Hope to see you at the show!

compared to stock.

There's a lot going on with these:

Rotopax Fuel Pack mounting: top and top Rotopax L bracket
Givi/Kappa Monokey Top Box mounting
KISS (DIY) Top Box mounting
SW-Motech Trax Top Box mounting

Newly discovered Kolpin Fuel Pack mounting: a Kolpin Fuel Pack Jr. with their mount will fit onto two existing holes in the middle.

Contrary to the wide angle lens pics it actually doesn't stick out past the exhaust pipes. It's 339mm (13 3/8") wide.
Doesn't interfere with removing the seat on either bike.

The Adv version comes with two longer stainless steel bolts and two CNC'd aluminium spacers and is available now.

The SE version comes with four stainless steel bolts and four CNC'd aluminium spacers and will be available shortly.

More specs:

Bug your local Holeshot Motorsports, Valley Moto Sport, Action Motorcycles or Maple Ridge Motorsports dealer if you want one.

Thanks for checkin it out!

MOD KTM 990 & 950 Adv/ 950 SE Top Rack

Here are some pics with the different mounting options fitted:

Rotopax top mount. When the 1 gal. is mounted you still have easy access to the starp slots 360* so you can easily put a soft bag on top. Alternatively there is a Rotopax upright L bracket option too.
You can also fit on Kolpin's mount and their Jr. 1.5 gal. Fuel Pack without drilling any new holes.

Givi/Kappa Monokey top box mounting:

SW-Motech Trax top box mounting:

KTMTRSW-Motech.jpg

Caribou's QFS system will also fit on.

The nice thing about Givi/Kappa, Trax and QFS mounting is they are fairly low profile so you can leave them on with a soft bag.

You still have the DIY KISS (1/4" carriage bolts and knobs from the hardware store) option too. This works well for smaller Pelican type boxes and it's simple, inexpensive and easy to get parts for.

Thanks for checkin it out!

MOD KTM Top Rack Dealers

MOD KTM Top Rack Dealers

Just a little update:

Due to our computer going down (motherboard) and then losing the back-up, I'm unable to update the website :(

So here the news:

FYI There are currently three dealers in BC stocking the MOD KTM 990 ADV & 950 ADV/SE Top Rack: Holeshot in Langley (also does Giant Loop bags), Action Motorcycles in Victoria (also does Giant Loop bags) and our new dealer, Alternate Cycle in Kamloops (also does Giant Loop bags).

So you can check them out for real and see what you think.

Thanks,

Dave

Not sure if I'm alone or not but I just found a hole rubbed through my Great Basin from the front corner of a competitors rack that has corners very similar to these. Maybe if there's a Gen II those front corners could be softened a bit?

Hi Triplenickel,

Good point and yes it can definitely be an issue! To that end we also finish the entire perimeter to soften the edges. I've noticed that a lot of the top racks out there aren't finished...sometimes at all! Is yours? I have no damage on my Great Basin.

All of the rectangular cut-outs and slots are also finished on ours too...since day one. Devil's in the details they say. It takes more time but it only makes sense! That means you can run the straps through any cut-out or slot without fear of the straps being damaged. This is particularly suited for the Great Basin as I typically run the straps through the front rectangular slots and then back out the rear ones.

Another point to note is with soft luggage of any kind you have to minimize movement as much as possible to avoid shifting and wear points. I've worn a few holes through my Ortlieb Dry Bag. Now I have Rok straps and I think they work much better, are more stable because of the tension and are so easy to use. Highly recommended!

Make sure you get the GL bags as tight as possible too. Sometimes this may mean using another hook or loop to facilitate the straps tightening and not binding. That's something I'll post on the GL threads though.

Thanks for the feedback!

MOD KTM 990/950 Adv & 950 SE/SM Top Rack

MOD KTM 990/950 Adv & 950 SE/SM Top Rack

A couple of updates of pics I haven't posted yet showing some more options.

Caribou's QFS DIY mounts will bolt right to the Top Rack (shown on BMW version here, pics courtesy of FASTREDBIKE...thanks!):
20110707-img_4858.jpg

They bolt right into existing holes designed into the Top Rack. They are low profile too. Shown here are the Pelican ones but I'd recommend the any case ones since they're even thinner.

20110708-img_4887.jpg
Medium top box shown

20110708-img_4886.jpg

Small Nanuk top box. It's easy to have a couple of different sized boxes with this system too.

20110707-img_4866.jpg
Inside the box. Dzus fasteners for tool-less quick release.

Remember this is a Do It Yourself option and it works very well.

Next up we also found out that Kolpin's mount for the Jr. 1.5gal fuel cell will also bolt right onto the Top Rack. Yet another option!

Way more options for you than anything else out there!!

Thanks for checkin it out!

Moto Overland KTM 990 Adv. Top Rack

Moto Overland KTM 990 Adv. Top Rack

We've done a few installs lately with different side racks so here are some pics:

IMG_6956.jpg

With Hepco+Becker side racks on a fresh 990 Adv.

IMG_6957.jpg

Showing the tapered profile of the rack.

Our standard spacers that come with the top rack work perfectly with this set-up too.

Next up: SW-Motech Quick Lock and Touratech.

These next two 990's are the One Wheel Drive crew's project bikes.
In case you haven't been to http://www.onewheeldrive.net/ you should go.

Why? Some great articles, rather entertainingly written (lot's of wit and dare I say more honest?), great videos and great pics too! Expect to see a review of our Top Rack some time in the new year...
deal.gif

The pics were taken at Moto Method's shop in Vancouver. If you live in or around Vancouver and you like to work on your bike but need a place to do it, they are a Community motorcycle repair shop that you can get a membership at, rent a bay and use their tools/equipment (tire changer etc.). You can also get advice or just get them to work on your bike if you don't have the time. They are very knowledgeable and friendly guys to boot!

http://motomethod.com/

On with the pics:
IMG_6612.jpg

Here's a comparison with the stock one.

IMG_7037.jpg

With the SW-Motech Quick-Lock racks you have two options: put our Top Rack right on top of their spacers or forget the spacers and just put it right on. These pics are with the MOD Top Rack without the spacers. Looks particularly stealthy with the black bolts they provide which will be used for either set-up.

IMG_7035.jpg

From underneath so you can see how it sits. It sits level and flush. The front bar is normally where our spacers (included with our Top Rack) would sit.

With Touratech:
IMG_6593.jpg

Very simple here as the Touratech mimics the stock set-up so you use our spacers and the included longer bolts for the front.

Simple in all cases.

You also now have a ton of options to mount to the Top Rack
deal.gif

Fuel:Rotopax, Kolpin,
Top Boxes:Givi/Kappa Monokey, SW-Motech Trax, Caribou QFS DIY, and our own KISS DIY

Let me know if you have any questions.

Don't forget that ALL MOD parts are made right here in BC too!

Thanks to Kevin from One Wheel Drive for some of the pics!

OWD reviews the MOD KTM 990 ADV Top Rack

OWD reviews the MOD KTM 990 ADV Top Rack

The One Wheel Drive crew posted a review of the MOD KTM 990/950 ADV & 950 SE Top Rack:

"The standard top rack that comes on the back of your KTM 950/990 Adventure or Super Enduro may fit with the look of the bike, but it’s not overly useful. Face it, there’s a battle to be fought even attaching KTM’s own tail bag to the thing, which is where the Moto Overland Top Rack comes in.
Beyond accommodating said tailbag, the rack offers multiple
Rotopax or Kolpin’s Fuel Pack Jr. mounting configurations for extra fuel, well placed strap slots for a variety of tail bags and tie-downs. For those who prefer hard luggage there are mounting points for Givi/Kappa, SW-Motech Trax, SW-Motech Top Rack Pelican Adapter, Caribou’s QFS DIY system and KISS – and the MotoOverland Top Rack looks a heck of a lot better than those companies’ native offerings. Combined with an easy install and bullet proof 4.75 mm thick aluminum CNC construction and you’ve got a quality Canadian made product.

There’s a couple stand out elements to the MOD Top Rack that are of special note. First off the plate maintains good clearance, making seat removal easy – though the KTM bag itself does infringe with this and requires some delicate pushing. All of the edges, including slits for straps, are machined nice and smooth to reduce wear. The thick black powder coat is textured which maximizes grip and over 20,000kms of testing has offered exceptional durability. Indeed, in a recent crash that totaled one of the KTM 990s, the MOD Top Rack only conceded a small scrape through the powder coat, and didn’t bend at all.
Finally the mounting of the rack is flawless, including the nice flat top surface thanks to countersunk fittings.

All and all, we’re damned pleased with the versatility and quality of the MotoOverland Top Rack and consider it essential equipment for your LC8 KTM."
