Hi all! This is my first post here, I'm StoneAgeMan on ADVRider and I frequent the Pacific NW area. Does this sound like I'm at an AA meeting? :dude:.
Last year I got in with a group of PNW ADV riders on their 5-day loop through BC to Whistler, never made it to Whistler (same thing happened in 2008
). We came up along Harrison Lake to Gold Bar, Kettle Valley on the way back - beautiful (and heart-wrenching to see the spread of the brown trees:shock
.
This year we're doing the ride again but we're going to be on the Island for the whole time. One of you folks (identity hidden to protect his reputation
) was kind enough to PM me about this site and some other ride info. So I've joined up and been lurking here for a while perusing the threads, especially the ride info.
I'd like a couple of things from this posting, one is to let all of y'all know we're going to visit, maybe some folks would like to meet up:hb: (and surely others may want to schedule vacations elsewhere
).
The other would be get some feedback on the routes and plans, as I develop them. For example, my first route was Port Alberni to Ucluelet/Tofino. Another rider noted that I'd included Mt. Ozzard and informed that the Coast Guard has closed access to that. I've got a couple of routes done up now, I'll be posting some pictures of those and can do .gpx as needed. Here's the link to the advrider planning thread: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=426236
The high-level view of the current plan is 7-10 days in late August. :ted: I've been talking up the option of staying at one or maybe two locations. Pros and Cons on both sides are pretty obvious. Port Alberni has the central access for sure -), it seems that I should be able find seven (7) loops around there that maximize dirt while still being big-bike friendly. I expect the rider distribution will be somewhat mixed, some GS/GSA (mostly skilled), KTMs, Husky/KLR. Last year was a mixed bag.
Last year some of the group hoteled it, some camped, one broke-down and slept in a truck-stop. This year I was hoping to find one (or maybe two) bike-friendly commercial sites with some cabins and some tent sites. Semi-close to groceries/gas/routes is of course desirable. If anybody knows of places like that that would welcome having 10-12+ (well-behaved for the most part
) dual-sport folks there for a week, please let me know.
Sorry for the length of this first post, nobody ever told me that I short-changed them on information:TTT:
