05 DRZ 400s Warranty

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just bought my first Dual Sport last weekend, and was wondering about the warranty and what I can do. They told me to bring it in at 1000km for the first service. First off what will they do besides a oil change, and second if I do the first service myself will it void the warranty at all? One other thing what should the first service cost me, rough guess?

Hey Wayde,

I can't comment on the 400S as I have an "E" version but I'm sure you know the first service is one of the most critcal. It's mostly to flush out any metal particles that may haveaccumulated during the break in process and could cause the bike harm if not flushed out.When I took my "E" model in(which was after 5hrs not 1000km) they told me that they usually just follow what's in the Suzuki manual (if that helps at all). My service took about 2.5 hours and was just under $200.00 bucks. I would justtalk to the dealer you bought it from and they should be able to tell you what's involved and then you can make your own choice. If you do change your own oil I don't think it should void your warrenty but again double check.

Check with your dealer first.

Most of what they do is inspect and tighten everything (something you should do yourself). Oil and Filtter change, you are alowed to do this yourself but keep your receipts and date everything if you do have a problem you will have to prove that you followed the proper proceedures.

I bought my DRZ from SV and I do all my own work. The bike is 1 year old and now has over 12,000 km. Lots of oil and tire changes thats it for the first year. But be warned, Grease your steering head bearings, I was told to do it but ignored everyone now I have to replace them:mad3:. When I pulled the steering apart they where dry.

Break in:

Read motoman's article on the net and realize it will work best if you "ride it like you stole it" on the first day and change the oil right after your first total heat / cool cycle.

Thanks guys, just got off the phone with then, they charge a hour's labor ($70) + materials for the S model. And yes I can do my own oil changes as long as I keepall thebills and a log of what I've done to it. So I guess I'll do a oil change my self then bring it in at a 1000k for the first service.

I would not even botherwith taking it to the dealer at 1000km. Doing your own service will not void the warranty. Just keep all your receipts for proof.

When I talked to my dealer about the 1000km service, he said that it was very important. When I asked him what exactly is done besides an oil change, he said they check all the engine bolts and re-torques them if needed. And they tighten the spokes.

I bought a service manual and it does say to check the exhaust bolts, but not the engine bolts. It also says to tighten the spokes. All this is pretty easy to do, and buying a manual is a lot cheaper than paying the dealer to do it.
