Ok, so I'm going to throw in my .001 here, I am using Maxaima in my KTM fleet, 990, 530, (200, 300 smokers) I have had no issues, always using the 100% synthetic.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and I rode Yamahas, I put in some cheap oil in my 550 Seca, and the oil window after 10 minutes of riding increased in volume by about 20% because it foamed up badly, the little window to look at oil level had gone completely white.

So, oil is not just oil, how many cars or diesel engines have gears and clutches whizzing around frappe'ing the oil??

Just buy good Moto oil and stop whining about how much it costs!!!

You are only really going to use about 10 litters of the stuff a year anyways if you have a fleet like me!!

Actually I used Maxxima 5/40 mc synthetic in my KTM for the first 40,000 km before switching to Rottella 5/40 synthetic, and yes there is a difference... With the diesel oil in the engine it shifted much easier and generally ran noticably smoother.. I am not the only one to report these findings after doing the switch from mc oil to Rotella, there is a reason why so many run it and saving money is only part of it....

I switched to Shell T6 in my 2011 FE570 right after break-in. The bike is at 10k and 214hrs and runs like a clock

Oil and filter changes every 20 hours.

Interesting. Every bike I have ran Rotella I have noticed notchier shifting. My DR650 especially does not like Rotella. I have had much better luck with Maxima 15w50 in both the DR and my 450EXC. Even my great shifting old YZ250 didn't like the Rotella. With better oils my YZ250 could be shifted at full throttle (racing). Switched to Rotella and I could do it anymore. But of course, YMMV.

Ditto. I tried Rotella T6 in my 690 ( ended up with a bunch of false neutrals ) and in my 525 ( Rekluse didn't engage/release as well (probably could have been fixed with Rekluse setup)). I will try T6 again in my current bike but haven't yet.
I agree that quality oil is quality oil. There is no need for Motorex in the Oranges, I doubt it's any better. I was very happy with Motul semi-synthetic but changed it every 10 hours. If I could run a decent full synthetic I'm sure the change interval could increase to many more hours - I'm not racing it!

Which Rotella were you using 15/40 T or 5/40 T6? Your the first one I have heard of that reported notchier shifting with the stuff especially in the DR, as there are quite a number of DR guys that run the stuff exclusively in their engines... To each his own, I will continue to use this stuff as my engine has given me a good long service life since I switched over 140,000 KMs ago...

If I remember right KTM recommended using a heavier than average oil in the 690, which oil did you end up going to after the Rotella didn't work... Wasn't the stock oil 15/60 motorex?

I think KTM recommended 20-60 or something like that. I tried 5-40 T6 - not a good choice. 10-40 semi-synth Motul worked much better. Although, in the summer heat, shouldn't they both have run as 40 weight?

Edit: Yes: 690 manual recommends Motorex 10W60.

15/40 Dino. I only tried on 4L jug of the 5/40 but honestly don't remember how the bikes shifted.

Last year I switched to this. https://www.amsoil.com/newsstand/motorcycles/articles/new-amsoil-synthetic-dirt-bike-oil/
As advertised the clutch performance is noticeably better and more consistent even in tight tech trails when things are getting hot.
I just bought a case of this as well. Have only thrown it in the XL500 so far and not enough riding yet to offer an opinion. But I'll be using the rest of the case on the 990 for this years riding.
I have been using Motul 10-50 in the 990 for last 2 years (bit cheaper than Motorex) bike ran and shifted fine & I liked the red colour, but did notice it was foaming in the oil tank so it made it a bit more difficult checking the level after warming/riding bike up as manual states to do before checking.
