The bike is currently in my shop almost completely torn down for cleaning. I started to take it apart to fix a squeeky mono shock ( which is now being rebuilt and should be done this week ) and once the monoshock was out I figured hell, lets do it right and replace all seals, grease nipples and gaskets I could. It should be like new when I am done.

I started changing a servo valve on mine once and found myself with a bare frame before I knew it.

I know what you mean, caught myself starting to pull out the motor to clean and respray but settled for a good detailing and touchup. It's hard not to go over board when its something you enjoy. Bike is now squeak free and almost 100% showroom condition with all seals and nipples greased or replaced. If I could located a left side plastic fairing in blue it would be like new.

Ive had 2 of these things, first one I bought off a friend was the original 84 single rad unit, they liked to overheat in hot weather and slow uphills, turned into a stanley steamer. When I bought it, about 3 years ago, the stator was gone, got one from Pacific Yamaha $500 and put it in, hadnt run in 15 yrs, carb cleaned, fired 2nd kick! Hot tip for quiet and performance exhaust mod was to fab on a 96 YZ silencer ( ebay $10) really woke it up in the power department!! and at least as quiet as stock too! Looks nice with aluminum silencer too. Rode it for 3 years, ( mostly back and forth to work tooling around here and there) put on 8,000k, total of 15,000 k and for 3 x more than what I paid ! Was in mint shape too though! Then bought a mint 96, same silencer mods, and it was great too, but only a short trip machine, did an all day Harrison ride, once, then sold it to a friend at work. Get some fatbar adapters and upgrade the bars, some good barkbusters, and they are a great little bike!!

That is just what I was planning on doing to the exhaust before I sold it to my dad. Now I just service it for him, I would hate to see one of these bikes neglected as they are fantastic. He has no need for more power as this is his trail bike that will see 200-300km a year tops, with 4,400km on it now it will probably last forever for him. I did put some barkbusters on it for him for that added bit of security. If yamaha updated the forks and the front brake and fitted a larger tank this bike would be very popular and would sell today no problem.
