I just purchased the 1997 Honda XR650L from a member on this site from Kelowna and I am hoping to ride this bike down to Mexico and much more. As for planning my trip I am at the stage of getting the bike ready now that I have it. Here is what I have planned or am thinking about doing so far. Any suggestions on what I have or what I dont have would be greatly appreciated.

Current Condition:

The bike has 13,000 KM with an aftermarket Clarker 3.7 Gal Tank and brank new Kendra Trak Master 2 Tires (20% Street, 80% Dirt), Acerbis Hand Gaurds, Skid Plate, FMF Core IV 2 Muffler.

My Plans:

1) Luggage Racks; I am hoping to make my own because they are so expensive any websites that offer good pictures or any pictures you guys have of how they work and connect would be awesome

2) GPS; I will be making a GPS holder attached to the handle bars to mount my GPS

3) 12 Volt Accessory; Was planning on wiring a 12 Volt accesory into the headligh to charge the following items (GPS, Cell Phone, Ipod) any information available on this would be helpfull too.

4) New tires?; Not to sure about this one the current tires are brand new, I was planning on gettingdifferent tires with a better street rating but im not sure what ratio to go with 50/50 or more 70/30. What's DSBC consensus?

5) Rear Sprocket; Was told a different rear sprocket for better mileage would be a good idea, how many teeth?

6) Shortening the Front Forks; I read shortening the front forks in the triple trees from 1/2" to 3/4" will help with steering and make the bike feel less like a chopper, is this true or a good idea?

7) Wind Shield; How much does this increase rider comfort for price? And does anyone know where to get one?

8) Uncorking; I was told the bike has not been uncorked, I am unsure wether or not I should have this done. I currentlyride a 250 two stroke Gas Gas and this 650 is the biggest bike I have ever had, and I will be travelling with a Land Cruiser 80% of the time, and I like good gas mileage, any opinions?

9) ANYTHING ELSE DSBC CAN THINK OF?

That is my list for now, hopefully I can keep this thread goign as more ideas come to me, and will keep posting.

i think thats the same one i looked at last week-[gooses] i was$$$ tooshort :(-it has a K&N filter- but still has the smog set-up ,i believe ,its in good shape- just go through it and do all the maintenance checks etc.you should be good to go ..i guess- -this bike is not too suited for extended HWY riding IMO as its tall-seat feels like a 2X4-wind prone-and a thumper-knobbies will wear out quick -but you want adventure!!! ............:p personally, I would load it on the LANDCRUISER and ride it on the BAJA when i get there, and save the 15000km?? of long, droning, hard riding to go down there......:shoot:p.s.I rode a CB750 custom down to monterey 15 years ago on a smooth 4cyl bike- i cant imagine doing that on a dirtbike!!!

I have the option of having it trucked down as far as South San Deigo, havent decided if I am going to take it up or not, I mean, its a road trip, not a hitchking trip.

i would suggest to take a weekend trip to say VAN ISLE orOREGON coast -just to see how it will be [shakedown cruise] and then figure it out from there..

The kendas are no good for the trip, they won't last they are also loud on the high way. Maybe Avon distanza ?

Stock gearing is 15-45 it will cruise nice at 110 kph withthose, not sure what youspeed you plan on doing. There is a 16 tooth available it is cheap and easy to change. Although I have not tried the 16t.

I have done a 10,000 km round trip, south & back. It is a MAJOR ride you may need more time & $$ then you expect....at least I did.

Time and money is not a problem. I have changed my entire life to make this trip, and I am not worried about either time or money. As well I plan on tracking about 1000 local km's before I leave for my journey.

So you dont feel that I should have any urgent need to change myrear sprocket?

The 650L will cruise along at 110-120 kph quite comfortably with stock gearing. Don't change the rear sprocket, the front is easier with almost no effect on chain length. If you are planning on lots of highway, I would leave the forks as they are, the bike is pretty stable on the highway for a dual-sport. Dropping the forks may make the front end twitchy at high speeds.

As for tires, the Trackmasters are my personal favorite, but not a good choice for highway, they are quite soft and will wear quickly. I would go for the Mitas EO-9 Dakar, or something similar for the rear. I have one on my XR now and it is a good compromise between off road traction and durability.

Definitely take the air pump and smog crap off, as well as the snorkel on the top of the airbox. Just make sure the bike is jetted richer, as the stock jetting is way too lean, resulting in running hot and backfires.

You can get small handlebar mounted windshields fairly cheap that can be removed without tools and thrown in the Land cruiser when the off road starts.

Enjoy the trip, and make sure to take lots of pics for those of us that can't do a trip like this!! Keep in mind, all this advice is just one guys opinion!!

Cheers,

Jon
