Hi there I'm interested in getting into trail , some dirt riding (no log/boulder jumpin) as my KLR is not meant for such adventures.
My price limit is marginal I know ($2000+) so here is where I need your edumacated assistance. I live in da cariboo so I don't have the luxery of just checking out several bikes in a weekend.
I want to know the story on the WR400 from 1998. Is that the first year they came out with that 4 stroke?
What are folks issues with this bike after 10 years?
How does one check the condition of the engine is it mearly by doing a compression test and if so what should the numbers read?
What there any major pit falls to look for and or make sure were fixed?
Are they trick/hard to start?
Can one modify the stock pipe/air boxto get extra power and if so is it easy to re-jet (ie: buy a certain jet for this mod and install to make things run better)?
How hard is trail racing on a bike, as long as the valves are adjusted and the oil changed is that about all that's required for these 4 strokes or....?
Anything else I should be concerned with....?
If anyone knows of a mechanically sound (cosmetics not important) trail bike for sale for a newbie to dirt to practice on (250 to 400cc range I'm 5' 9 ' 190lbs) please let me know! Given all my otherinterests I am looking at getting out ~6x a year so the bike won't be beaten on.
Thanks eh.....
