SO some one wants to trade me their 2000 drz400s with 18000k (reportedly street miles;)) for my 2001 dr650 with 11000k. the 400 is stock. The 650 has UFO tail light kit UFO hand guards with turn signals built in, skid plate, clark tank and a dyno jet jetting kit. The 650 also has D.O.T. knobbies with about 600k on them. So I would love to hear you guys rate the trade. I think I would want some cash and the 400. How much cash would be fair??? I am eager to hear what you guys think. ROCKE

P.S. how many km is too many on a 400 and what will go wrong with them??

first of all check to see what upgrades or fixes suzuki made to this first year drz 400 .second thats a pretty sweet looking dr 650 .and third there is no replacement for displacement . i am sure if i was to trade the 400 owner he wood have to come up with some serious cash. just my 2 cents ride on . ps . i do know the s model differs largely to the dirt model the s model has a smaller header pipeless cam shaft profile .lower compression . epa restricted carb and the suspention is very soft . if it was me and had to have a drz 400 it would be the the off road model with a dual sport kit and thats comming from a proudowner of 1993dr 650 25 litre acerbis tank ,super trapp exhaust , acerbis hand guards . progressive suspention . dynojet kit owned since 1993 never let me down. i use my 01 rm 250 for my woods weapon . if i could only get that street legal it would be the ultimate extreme dual sport.

Hi Rocke.

The 2000 - 2003 S model came with 2 - way adjustable forks rather than the superior 3 - way forks like the off-road models & RM's.

The automatic camchain tensioners had an unusually highfailure rate, like the majority of Zook's from 2000 - 2003, especially the Hayabusas.

The spacer behind the countershaft sprocket on all model years up to 2004(?) is not stainless; and on a poorly maintained bike especially, is prone to corrosion and damaging the transmission seal... resulting in a sudden loss of oil...

Other than the suspension upgrade and colour scheme changes, I'm not aware of any other differences between model years. But I recall Ted claiming to be an expert on the matter, so....;)

I haven't read of any 400's being 'clapped out' at a certain mileage. I would think that a water pump rebuild after five years or 20K would be good insurance...

As far as trade value, you've owned enough bikes over the years Rocke to know that your extras aren't worth much in a dealership trade; that's a reasonable factor even in a private trade. The bone-stock 400 is worth no more than $4,400... You'll need tires,case-savers, hand-guards, rad-guards & a skid-plate before you hit a trail. The rest of the math is up to you - remember that you bought the 650 'cause it was sooooo cheap.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! No one needs to know how much I payed for my 650. Even though it is pretty much public knowledge (thanks to my big mouth):D. I'm just trying to figure out what my 650 is worth. I think $4400 is a little high for the 400 given the miles. I know that both bikes sell new, 04 for $5999. I'm curious to see what the $1300 drop in retail does to used prices.

Thanks a lot for the specific info on the 400 that is exactly what I was looking for. I have always wanted a DRZ but got the 650 for reasons known. I just want to make sure IF I trade it is fair for both parties involved. Any one else with info feel free to post I'm all ears. ROCKE

Trade in the 650 for an outgoing 04 400s or E. A few mods will make it right rippy. The peace of mind you'll have is a big thing. Dude, that's 18,000 k on a 400cc single! And you can imagine there was a lot of flat out throttle work for constant high street speeds...I'd keep the 650 or get a new 400. There CHEAP right now! Bucks

I just returned from San Fransisco and visited some of the local dealers there, No deals on the DRZ400 or the KLR400 If they have one in stock you will pay $5,499.00 US for one. They expect the 05 will be more. So if you can get your hand on a new 04 for less than 5900 here thats a good deal.

On the note on which is better the E or the S

The S model come with the way cool dashboard and a fan. The reason they come with a fan is because the manufacture has to warranty the bike for one full year. The E model you get 90 days (chances are you wont do enough damage from overheating in that short period). Last time in McNutt one of the riders (Larry from the US) riding a E model had lots of overheating problems:spl:, because of the slow pace. The other differences I have heard about is the higher compression engine and larger header pipe, different carb. not sure what these do to the bottom line performance, but your are not buying this thing to race.
