2008 KIR650 Tool Kit

I'm heading out on some long on/off road expeditions and need to know what to pack for a tool kit. The kicker is that I only have a couple of weeks to put it together.
I expect to be in Vancouver in a couple of weeks so hopefully I can get everything I need there or on-line.

I stole this list from Lonewolf on another thread. It looks good to me but I was looking to make sure that it's optimized for my 2008 KLR650.

I might be wrong but I think the counter sprocket and the rear wheel nut are 27mm.

No rear tube?

One other thing I will be adding to my toolkit in the near future is a "bead buddy" (google it). Its a little bracket that hooks over one of you spoke to keep the bead pushed down into the tire. It would be a lifesaver when doing tires alone.

The longer the trip the more tools I would instinctively want to carry, but resist the urge, lighter is better and if you don't have it chances are you can make due without it or find it locally.

The only thing I would really add to my kit is a pair of vice grips, some duct tape and a couple fuses.

Ps. Make sure you size those tire irons properly for your bike's axles.

It's very rare that I get a rear flat, if I do it can normally be patched. If patches can't fix it then the front tube he has listed from my kit can be installed in the rear untill such time as you can get a rear tube. On a KLR carrying two tubes probably isn't a big deal, but for me on my 450 carrying 2 tubes in my backpack is overkill.

The minimal toolkit:

Years ago I built a neat tank-mount rack on my Jawa/CZ 250 trials bike so I could look like those tough dudes in the ISDT. On the rack was a military canvas container that had a ton of tools and spare parts. I could've rebuilt the entire bike on the trail.Eventually Igot tired of packing stuff that NEVER got used and now my motorcycle kit isreduced to items that I might actually need..

1. First, my bike (XT500) already has a small container for a spare spark-plug built in under the seat. I can never recall having to use it in 20 years, but there it is. In the same compartment I also have a master link and a small 6 volt bulb with soldered leads and clipsthat will tell me if I have voltage or not which is all you need. It will easily check for continuity using the bike's battery and weighs less than an ounce, and I can also use it to set the timing in an emergency. The bike already has a spare fuse holder.

2. Wedged in my license plate mount are two spare cotter keys, and under the seat is a roll of electrical tape. Wound around my handle bars are two velcro elastic straps for clamping the brake levers in the ON position so the bike won't roll when I prop it up.

3. In my toolbox I have a converted 6 inch crescent wrench that has the gear rack ground to allow it to expand enough to fit larger nuts. The handle has been smoothed and shaped to form a tire-iron. There is also an "ofla" razer knife.

4. Also in the toolbox is a small roll of haywire, two small hex allen-keys, a very small pointed jaw vise-grip and a chainsaw spark plug wrench that is bent to fit my bike and the handle end is a phillips screwdriver. The handle of the chainsaw plug wrench also fits the 'tommy-bar' holes on my axles. There are also 2 small open end spanners I believe 6mm/8mm and 10mm/11mm.

Along with these small items is a small roll of automotive hookup wire and a few crimp connectors.

5. I also havea brass cable end to fit my levers that has aset-screw in case of a pulled-off cable end.It isjust a small brass slug with a small hole for the cable and drilled and tapped for a setscrew in the end.It's made from 1/4" brass rod andit's come in handy once on a loose clutch cable end.

All of the toolkit stuff is wrapped in a clean rag and fits the standard plastic toolkit box.

6. In my riding jacket pocket is a smallplastic MTBpump and a patch kit, and a small first aid kit which includes a key-ring flashlight and a spare AAA, and on my belt I have a small "leatherman" type tool.

You can't carry tools to treat all possible events....Ewan and Charlie had fully loaded Range-Rovers, technicians and a medical man and still had to order parts..

I would pack some zip ties in case you wipe out and need to hold the fairing together etc and depending where your off to maybe a spare bulb for your front light. THink youve got the rest covered, good luck
