My friends 2008 KLR caught fire in Langley today on HWY 1. (not a DSBC inmate). He pulled over when he saw white smoke out the back and the flames quickly engulfed the bike. He burned his hand and his jacket and pants were burned. The gas tank exploded in a 10' flaming blowtorch and the bike burned to a melted mess. The traffic was backed up for miles. He had new tires and brakes installed last week.

Luckily he took out full insurance last month. Watch this space for report back on how that pans out!!!!!

Here is how it was as a farkled green bike...

- now it's a very sad matt black.:p
He has NO idea of how this fire started - bike had 15000km and ran great. Any ideas of what could cause this? I've seen the fire photo's and video he took and hope to get a copy soon - they are amazing!

The weird thing is he bought the bike (used) exactly 3 years ago - to the day. He was riding to Sumas to pick up his new after market seat for the bike which he had bought online ($400). :(

Glad to hear he got to the side of the road and wasn't seriously injured. Thats insane, saw a ladies car do the same thing in Langley yesterday.

There was a recall on those for faulty wiring. Since he got it used maybe the info didn't get to where it need to be. Hope he heals well. Burns are nasty.

Did you get any further info on this? I wouldn't be surprised if it were the wiring, I had to trace through the harness on my '08 a little while ago and ended up adding a fair bit of loom. My neutral light was always either on or flickering and I would blow the headlight fuse every time I turned on my high beams. I found those two shorts and several other shorts-in-progress for my trouble, and it was easy enough that I was kind of kicking myself for having put it off for so long; now I'm just glad I wasn't bbq'd on the highway.

I had the wiring harness recall done back when the bike was new, fwiw.

If it were electrical, though, wouldn't the main fuse have just blown, at worst?
