640 adventure cam roller failure

Hey guys,

Well for those who know me you know my bike.... Not the prettiest but well maintained ish.... Well up until recently it was mainly problem free. A few weeks ago i was having a top end knock. Almost sounded like the auto de-comp was kicking in at idle. Then i couldn't get it started. Well finally had time to get into it, and well probably the worst case scenario.

As you can see from the pics my exhaust cam is done... about 50 thous missing from the top. The culprit a sized cam roller.

now anyone have a source on where i can get a cam for my 2003 adventure? hopefully for cheap and before the orca?

Well action was very helpful, got my parts ordered;

cam
needle bearing
roller bearing
and rocker follower bearing

should be here by friday or monday!

Looks like you have some serious wear on that lobe. How many km do you have on your bike?

about 28xxx km. It was rebuilt around the 20xxx km mark due to a cracked piston ring ( previous owner) due to low octane gas. I guess from reading this is a fairly common failure between 20-40xxxkm so replace yours lol

So got the new cam in founnd the root of the issue.... one of the needles must have gone. Need to do the other roller now just to be safe so i need one more part.

Well just thought I'd give and update. The bike went back together great and I actually made it to the orca run and it was like a brand new bike. started easily and ran great pulled hard. A few note on any one with this problem , I did not use the crank locking bolt as i didn't have it it was not necessary IMO. A wooden wedge through the cam chain sprocket is enough to remove the bolt. Other than that the engine manual pretty much has it bang on and is easy to follow. Be careful that you don't pry on the roller bearing support as it is very fragile.

on a side note the bike is down again *sigh.... the Pulser coil went so no spark.... oh well easy part to replace

Where to get engine manual?

BTW, which route did you do? We did A with the big bikes (mine's a 640 and Don's is that super trick 690 ralley).
Wasn't too difficult, but we skipped the last bit.
Pretty capable bikes IMHO.

we did the B loop.... the malahat loop was very hard ! i couldnt imagine doing some of those loops backwards
