640 Adventure Owners?

I own a 640 Adventure 03 model which I purchased new in the summer of 04 at a bit of a discount {still cost a bundle}. I looked at the 950 and the 640 and picked the latter because it more suited my riding style and had a 30% lower price tag. The 640 is by far the favorite bike I've owned, but it takes a little getting used to. The vibration is pretty high when new but smooths out quite a bit after break in. My old KLR felt like a plush couch compared to the KTM which has a much stiffer dirtbike like ride to it. Some of the maintenance issues such as oil changes require a little more fiddling but are still pretty easy. I'm coming up to 41,000 KM with very little problems so far and a good portion of the miles were racked up off pavement. I've used the bike for solo touring as well as several extended trips riding 2up with no problem {the bike can carry quite a jag of gear}. I've taken the bike through some pretty nasty terrain and found it to work pretty good but is a bit of a brute on some of the tighter trails where the size and weight of the machine is more of a factor. For a one bike does everthing, it's up near the top of the list, but make sure you testride before you buy because it has quite a differn't feel to it than any other 650 class thumper which may or may not be to your liking.

I had a 2002 LC4E 640 for two years and I loved it. I traded up to a 950 just for the advantage it had on longer trips.

Like Island Hopper says , you have to try one, It might not be your "cup of tea"

Nice bike!
Thanks for the input.
Im 6 foot 4 so I understand the 640 is one of the taller dual sports.
I would rather sacrifice a little comfort on the pavement for the better off-road performance and I guess the vibration will not be noticed too much on the logging trails and roads.
I currently have a 300 XCW and love the KTM product although a bit pricier, so far very worth the extra bucks.
I assume the 640 will impress me as much as the 300.
Any other tall guys out there with a 640?
Thanks again!!

I bought a 625SMC this year. I was looking at the adventure but I'm short and it is tall. I alsoonly wanted it for the street as I have a 200sx for the woods so the 625 was a better fit. My understanding is that the 640 and 625 have the same engine just a different carb.

I keep hearing onktmtalk it smooths out afterits broken inbut mine never did, it still vibrates like a paint shaker. My old XR650R was so much smoother. This bike still numbs various body parts after an hour of riding. Very fun bike, the only real down sideare the vibration and the oil changes are a bit ugly (burping the oil in the frame can be messy).

Valves are simple to check, engine has been around for a long time so all the bugs should be worked out of it by now.
