950 gearing

Anyone running 16/45 gearing on their 950 Adventure?

Stock is 17/42 and I have gone to 16/42, but I still don't get much of a chance to use 6th gear.

I think that the lower gearing would be a huge advantage off road.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Good day

I am running 17/45 and it does the job for me almost the same ratio 16/42I beleve .

As for the 6 gear I only use mine over 130/140kph............. off road:hf:mainly on logging road and open area.

Let me know if you try the 16/45 at 120km what rpm you would run .

We're you at the Noob ride? Were you riding the black 950?

Yes, I was there. It was a lot of fun. I was looking for you, but you were not riding your 950
There are two upgrades that I want to do over the winter
1 - change the gearing to 16/45
2 - put heavier springs in the front forks

Before you try going to heavier springs, try adjusting them first. The preload and rebound are very adjustable. I'm 250lbs and thought I was going to have to change the springs until I adjusted them for my weight and on the sport setting. I'mnow completely happy with the stock springs. I never bottom out and they handle good when abused :) I've got my 45 rear on order and I'll try that before changing the front as well.

I put my 45 tooth sprocket on my 950 Adv. this morning and then took it out for a ride to see what difference's it made. Stock is 17/42
I was at 16/42 I am now at 16/45

2 things became very apparent

1 - It is VERY COLD in Kelowna this morning

2 - KTM 950 Adventures have a 6th gear.

Here are my findings. (these speeds are actual (GPS) not indicated (KTM speedo)

Idle in first gear - 10 kms / hour

5000 rpm (sweet spot on my bike) in 6th gear - 120kms/hr
5700 rpm in sixth gear - 130 kms/hr.
4500 rpm in sixth gear - right around 106 ish which is where I like to keep my speed on the highway most of the time

So,,,here is my thinking. If I was cruising most of the time in 5th gear at 5000 rpm and now I can cruise most of the time in six gear at 4500 rpm shouldn't my fuel mileage increase? Also I have lowered my first gear gearing so It should be very nice to ride in the bush

I am very pleased with the results keeping in mind that I have only ridden the bike for 10 minutes in sub zero conditions. Next spring will tell

I am going to go and take a HOT shower!

I also put my 45 tooth on and put about a 100k on today. Huge difference. Like KTMken said, the bike does have a sixth gear and I can now use it without having to break the speed limit :) I think I'm going to leave the front sproket stock.
