Is changing up to a 17 really worth it for a long trip to say Alaska? What would you say happens with rpm at say 100km/h.
I have a 15 now and it is great for daily runabouts as well more serious offroad stuff, first gear works well for slow offroad stuff with a 15. I run 5000rpm at 100km/h with this gear.
I have a 42 at the rear.

My 03 is geared (transmission) differently from the 02, but the 16-42 is about 120km/h at 5000. I remember cruising the I-5 and Olympic Peninsula at about70mph around 5000 rpm. For long hours on the interstate and highways, I would probably prefer to go to a 17/42.

I don't have a tach on my bike (02 LC4) but I do know that with the 17t the feel of the bike is much more relaxed above 90 kmph. It only takes about 4 or 5 minutes to change the sprocket so I do change them around quite a bit depending on the type or riding I am planning on doing. If I was going to ride it to Alaska I would definitely change to the 17 tooth.
You guys already know this but, make sure that you buy the KTM part 17t sprocket. An aftermarket sprocket will not fit. The KTM part is a low profile sprocket and it will not hit the swingarm.

Unfortunately I have had my alotted quota for the weekend. I was out the whole day yesterday at Herling, did some really nice technical stuff, it is not as wet as the weekend before so I had a great time. Rode most of the poker run trails in sections, I am really tempted to do the Poker run.....! My buddyis on aLC4, so we are thinking about it....!
