buyin used KLR 650

It seems the year of the bike has less effect on the price of a used KLR than the add ons (Farkles) and the mileage. So 1993 or 2003 only makes a few hundred dollars difference unless one has lower milage or more farkles.

I noticed a couple other things as well, I was surprised how many have been moved North and south across the border, and at the age of some of the units it is almost impossible to guess if the mileage for real or not.

Is it as safe to buy an early 1990's as a newer machine, milage being equal.

They sure retain resale Value.

I am used to liter sportbikes and was expecting the KLR650 to feel much more sluggish than the ones I have test driven, they have a feel more like a vtr1000 or mide aged ducati in the power characteristics, obviously not in performance just in the rougher sort of edge to singles and Vtwins.

Owners sure seem to like them a lot.

Yup, mileage, farkles and maintenance "generally" determine the price of a KLR.

But, there are differences between model years. There were several updates prior to 96 noteably engine updates. 96 through 07 are the same except for colour. 08s are, of course, a lot different. Take a look at the KLR faq at http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.htmlfor the model differences. The faq also lists links and lots of helpfull info.

KLR[used] prices aresome of themost way out of line in motorcycling,IMO- i could buy a new one cheaper than what some guys ask for their 15 year old bikes..:spl:eek:r so it seems..your best bet isto save up a chunk of change and buy a new or last years model for a DS bike instead of buying an older, used dirt -bike that will need lots of new parts etc,to bring it up to a safe and trouble-free condition....$$$$...yeah,that$$$ what im talking about..keep looking....good luck...

Well I got one, a 2004, very clean, looks like it was realy a commuter but who knows , it has a few extra peices I got it for $3000.00 so I am happy with that. There are a couple more things I think it needs. I am not sure what is really necesary, the fork brace looks like a good idea as does something to protect the rear brake master cylinder. The radiator protector I am not so sure of, but I can see that this is how it all starts, add this, add that to no end, hehehe I guess thats part of the fun.

Congrats!

I'd do the rad protectors and barkbusters first. :)

But it really depends on what you want to do with it.

It has an aftermarket skidplate that looks to protect the waterpump and the drainplg as well, no rad protection, it has heated grips and a centerstand. I am not sure if the fork springs have been replaced, I have seen rad protectors that fit inside the plastic shrouds below the tank and some that go right around them, so not sure.

My intention is to do lots of 1 and 2 day off road rides, lots of 2 or 3 hour rides from Chilliwack on and off road. Also a one week trip from Grand Forks to Kootneys and Kananaskis with as much off highway as possibe, and I intend to do 5 or 6 days of FSR in NE Oregon. So options that suit that riding as well as a GPS unit.
