Center Stand

Howdy Gents,
Have any of you put a center stand on your klr.
If so hows your ground clearence off-road.

P.S.anybody read "The High Lonsome" article in the latest
Canadian Biker magazine. Pretty cool ride.

Hi. I've had a centre stand on since last spring. I don't really consider it an off road problem, but I'm too gimpy to really test anything beyond a fire road ! I'll attach a photo, so you can judge for yourself. There seems to be a lot of negative stuff written about the need for a stand. To adjust or lube your chain, change a tire, work on the bike with both sides upright, and even just to change oil, the stand makes things easier. It is tough to get the bike up on it. I carry a small piece of 2X4 and back the rear wheel on it before yanking the bike up. It's a tough haul and you won't be lifting the bike just to gas up !

Burnaby Kawasaki seems to be the only local option for your KLR needs but I don't know if they carry any centerstands.

As for clearance off road, as KLR Brad asked, I've done about 700km of off road since I installed mine and don't even know it's there. It does take a little effort to get the bike up on the stand but it has already proven it's worth when I mounted new tires this spring and when I oil my chain.

If there is one item on the KLR to worry about when it comes to low clearance it's the oil drain plug. Even with the aluminum skid plate, I managed to bottom out and scrape my 'low profile magnetic plug'. I don't want to think of the damage that might have occured if I still had the bigger head, stock plug installed.

dual star has the stands also, off road isn't an issue if anything it can be considered a long skid plate, it's a no brainer, get one. VERY important tho, ensure (with a hammer) that the stand fits tight upagainst the frame where it bolts on, I've sheared off my right side footpeg bolts (at which time Joker takes a pic. of the back of my head) twice before I pieced together the problem, if the fir isn't tight to the frame (footpeg mount) if/when you smack the stand on an immovable object (rock) it can shear the bolts, now get out the ez outs. ouch. get the stand it's well spent money, Wayne.

I have had a center stand for 6 months but never got around to putting it on, well now it is on and love it wow-doing service is now easer. Chain adjustment, oil change and not to mention fixing a flat will be a lot easer than ever before and parking glad I did it.

I got mine from Dual Star.

Hey..... nice master cylinder cover.... did you make it yourself? If so... how much would you charge for one?

Hi. Yes, I made the cover. It's really easy. I used an old piece of the aluminum material used for truck tool boxes that I found at the recycling centre. I just cut a rectangle out, ground the edges to the round shape on a rotary stone grinder, drilled a few fancy holesand bent it in my vice. I don't think I have any material left as I did make a couple more for my very LUCKY friends. If I find any suitable material, I'll e mail you, but I won't be at the recycling place for a while.
