Doo-Hickey Repaired at Booger"s

I'd like to say thanks to Greg at Booger's Bike repair in Maple Ridge
the job was done last night and at < 7000kms the spring was broken.
If anyone is still running with out the upgrade I'd recommend you to
do so, and get the kit with the coil spring rather than the torsion spring
Also if you're not sure about taking on the task by yourself I would say
give Greg a call... He'll fix you up in short order!

Why not use the torsion spring? Appears to last longer.

Greg tried a number of times but where the spring hooks onto the doo-hickey the spring stuck out at a funny angle and the starter gear was hitting it...
(it looked exactly like the photo in the instruction sheet) but it just was not going to work!
I took some photos showing this I'll see if I can post them up!

Seems the torsion do-hickey kit was not plug and play as advertised. After grinding away some material on the new doo because the starter gear rubbed on this even without the spring installed I called some guys who made the torsion part work only after cutting or filing a groove in the top of the doo to stop the spring from sliding forward. Seems like allot of machining to make the fix.

KLR owners. If you do the doo or not never trust that the loosening and tightening of the balancer chain adjuster bolt will actually do anything. Tip your bike on it's side (unless you've drained the oil) every 5,000km or so and take off the outer cover and inspect the CHAIN for tension. with a flashlight look between the ring gear and the case at about the 7-8 o'clock position for the ajuster spring. You should see some gap between the coils indicating tension. Poke it with a scribe or suitable pointy thing and physically feel the tension. If it's loose you'll be doin the doo. There are some special tools needed for this. The outer gasket is $12 bucks or so and should not be omitted or re-used.

KLR Year?

KLR Year?

What year is your KLR?
I've read that the KLR650E, 2008+, has an adequate do-hickey and spring.

The spring on my 2009 was loose, like it was the wrong size. Might as well not have been there. Boo kawasaki! i put eagle mike doo in with torsion spring, no issues at all.

how did you know the doo was broken ? what did he charge you and did you supply the parts or did booger. where is booger's place ? Me thinks at 37,000 kms my doo is possibly broken.

I did not know anything was broken, My story is this, after I bought the bike I talked to lots of other owners and read articles and thought that I should change this out. At less than 7000kms I bought the Studebaker Kit from MTR Motorsports along with the two gaskets required and had Greg install it for me, as he said the kit was not plug and play and with some farting around and a spring that he had in stock he was able to get me out the door in one evening, I suggest that you send Greg a PM for a quote and I'm sure that with his service you'll be a s satisfied as I was. He is located in the Haney area of Maple Ridge and that should be easily accessible from Surrey via the new bridge...
I'd be interested in hearing back if your spring is broken or what is left??
good luck

Yes! It was the proper after market spring... I thought that I had taken a photo of it in place, I guess not.

I will be getting booger to do the doo for me, I ordered parts and they should have shipped them today. I had them ship it to Blaine and will pick it up next Tues, wed or Thursday and hopefully make plans with Booger to have it done when it's convenient for him. Not too sure what Bigmac means by spring in stock, i ordered my kit with the torsion spring and told them since I am paying for 2 coil springs to include them as well. I ordered from happy trails who sell eaglemike doo's to be honest I had read to avoid studebaker as they use inferior steel, i don't know this to be the case but the vast majority of people seem to trust eaglemike. Randual, if you want to see the eaglemike part before it goes in as a comparison i'll give you a heads up as to when Booger can doo the work. Ed

Ok I'll clarify here. I was hoping that the coil spring that Booger had in stock was a EM coil spring, not just any old spring he had laying around. Em has 2 coil springs, one 35 mm long , the other 38mm. These were out before his torsion spring update. Used the 35mm on mine. If you were to use any old spring. I think you would end up with another broken spring in 7000kls . Not saying that Booger used "any old spring" but, EM parts are the best. Use them if you can. Think I still have the 38 mm spring on hand, if anyone needs one. No offense intended!!

Randy got the 35mm Eagle Mike spring. ( spare from my KLR)
Again Even with the "fix" there is no substitute for pulling off the outer case cover and physically ensuring there is proper tension on the balancer chain which stretches over time and has wear limit.

None was ever taken, I just wondered why you asked about the spring in stock. Didn't quite make sense to me. Didn't know if Booger sold the part and you had a doo with no spring. I did read about them having two springs of the size you mentioned it sometime ago. When i ordered the parts I made sure happy trails knew I wanted Eaglemikes kit with 3 springs, one of which is torsion. I had also read Eaglemike saying klr650.com selling Studebaker copies of his design that are made in China. He says they might last the life of the bike or may not, says his WILL last the life of the engine. Googling it or searching http://klrworld.com/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=3385dc1e1be6538c0bf32c94be6de361&action=search2 Sold me Ed

Was that your 2009 OEM spring or an aftermarket?

So much to learn.

klr.jpgMy bike is a 99. There has been only one owner of it. Me. I have heard that although they may have tweaked the doo for 08's it should still be replaced. I recommend an eagle mike kit. It has a good solid feel when compared to the original doo.
