Has anyone found a longer travel shock for 96+dr650's? I would like to upgrade the suspension and I thought DRZ400 forks with some heavier springs or xr650l would work on the front. The rear.......?
I'm 6'4" 220 and I would like to be able to ride the bike a bit harder and the long travel would open up the legroom for me.

No, Have not really pursued it. Likely better just to go with the 400drz....

Cogent Dynamics makes an awesome shock for DR650. The owner and builder of the piece rides a DR650. Contact Rick and give him your weight and weight of the gear you normally carry and your riding style ie; aggressive ect. He will custom build one with the right spring and damping. I have one in my KLR. It's the single best investment to get more off road performance. Once you fine tune the easily adjustable unit it will stick to any surface with a feel of security you can't get from the junk stock shocks. Cogent also has springs and damper systems for the front as well. Guaranteed for life.

Mine was about $600US.After taxes and duty and exchange about $800CAN. Factory KLR is $1200! Google Cogent Dynamics Moab shock. He can make them for the bikes with lowering links and he hinted he could make a taller than stock. Like most after market shocks they have completely adjustable pre-load and the Moab has 22 different damping settings. The Moab make my KLR feel like a different machine, well planted, smooth and confident.
