The directions for my KLX are:
with Odometer displayed - with MODE button held on push RESET to cycle between mph & kph
worth a try
Edit: did a search and turns out it may not be possible at all. One page showed that only on UK DRZs can the speedo be changed.

There was a guy on craigslist that could mod the display. From what I remember I believe the display can switch back and forth from km's to mph's but the switch to do it is not there. A hole has to be drilled where the switch was but I can not remember if a switch has to be added. One thing to keep in mind that if this mod gets done the mileage displayed will not be right.

So, it turns out I'm not alone. You have to make sure that you do not have any of the trip options highlighted (Black bar underneath) the hold down the "select" button until the display changes from MPH to KPH. However.... as many others have experienced, the "Select" botton often becomes sticky and won't repsond. This was my issue. Cracked open the cluster, used some electronics contact cleaner on the button and problem solved. Thanks for the help! As always.
