drz400s random stalling

Hey, my stock drz400s seems to stall at lower rpms spontaneously. Restarts no problem and goes no problem until the next "surprise". Typically stalls occur off the line, during low speed technical clutching stuff, occasional downhill low rpm, and at "the moment of truth" when applying gas to overcome obsticles at low speed - its been doing it randomly since I bought it but thought it was my new bike learning curve... any ideas on what it may be?

Today, trying to identify the issue, I went up a paved hill in second gear low speed low to mid rpm and it stalled nearly throwing me from my riding position... so I know something is up. My buddy seems to have similar issues with his drz... any body know how to deal with this?

this problem limits control and confidence so I'd like to rid the bike of it...

Could be your float in the carb is getting stuck closed. Take the carb out and give it a good cleaning.

re side stand...don't think so as it stalls on pavement / flat terrain / coming off a red light...

re float... bike starts quickly with no issue as I struggle to complete/recover my manuvre - I assume its likely getting fuel ok as it idles fine, street speed is fine, and highway speed is fine as well...

seems to hesitate / occasionally stall when given small throttle changes at low rpm - often off the line at the moment of truth it will go "ping" and stall. Makes me feel like a beginner stalling out all the time. (I've ridden for 20 years)

any chance this is drz character.... could it be the 400s carb starving the engine? the new engine "tight" during break in? 1200KM

A few things it could be comes to mind...

Suzuki engines are notorious for been tight when new and stalling is the norm...

If things don't improve after a couple thousand KM you could try the following:

Could be your float height is set to high and allowing things to be slightly rich...
A sign of richness is not much choke required to start a cold engine... Check and adjust float tang so float is just level with carb body when the needle shuts off the fuel...

You could try adjusting you pilot fuel screw 1/4 turn in or out and see if it helps...

If not, try dropping the jet needle down 1 clip position {move clip up 1 slot away from pointy end}

I had the same experience with my 2005 DRZ400. It would stall regularly and often at awkward moments. The air screw had already been accessed on my DRZ (they are hidden under a cap on stock DRZs) and I tried richening it up but it only got a bit better. I increased the idle speed which helped.

The issue mainly to dothe extremely lean jetting Suzuki uses to meet EPA standards. I think the best cure would be to either shim the carb needle to richen mixture in the just off of idle situation or buy a jet kit that has a richer needle and possibly a richer slow speed jet. Opening up the air box will only aggravate the problem unless you are going with a jet kit. Big bore singles notoriously suffer from off of idle lean running and the street DRZ is a good example. The off road carb is totally different and from all reports works much better but it is an expensive upgrade.

If you are not one to tinker with your carburator I would suggest go to a shop with good experience with these bikes that can properly install and tune a jet kit.You might try Modernas theyhave good experience with these.

Definitely bypass the side stand switch. It isn't causing you the stalling problem you are experiencing but is dangerous off road when g forces bounce the side stand down killing the spark. This can be catastrophic if you are trying to loft the wheel for a hole or whoop as it can almost throw you over the bars.

I got fed up and bought a bike with fuel injection andI would never goback. I think it is really unacceptable for manufacturers to sellbikes with suchpoor fuel management systems when thetechnology exists tototally eliminate theproblem and greatly improve the riding experience.

Good luck with your DRZ
