many factors. go to thumpertalk for diagnostics and help. it's rare that they fail on the drz's. not common anyway.

Remember to replace the Stator and Regulator as a set.

If you run your bike with a low battery or use your bike charging system to charge a dead battery, you will probably end up with burning the insulation of your stator. Although the stator should be able to operate at 100% I expect they cant. Most problems I have found with stators is the Plug and lead wires have been burned and people dont fix or replace them.
Operating you bike with a low battery (under 12vdc) does all sorts of bad things to your wiring. As voltage drops Amperage wil go up. Amps = Heat

Don't be in too big a hurry to replace the stator without doing ALL the diagnostics first....like...uhm... I did.

Thumpertalk has tons of info on this bike and you may well find it has nothing to do with the stator....like...uhm... I did.

Do the "free power mod" if haven't already....it will deliver .5 volts + more directly to the battery and doing it saved me from buying a new battery...and a kicker kit....but I bought a stator for my workshop shelf.

BTW, I can't believe the difference in my DRZ's starting capability after that easy little modification to the wiring.
