I was wondering about grinding noice, while riding, so I took a closer look at the drive train. I think this one is worn a bit too much. It's from my DR650. What do you think?

You should not be experiencing that kind of wear on your front sprocket with only 8200 kms.

Check

Did you put a new chain on when you installed the sprocket? Two metal surfaces will wear longer if they are matching

Did you change both sprokets? Always install new sprockets and chains together. See above

Chain Tension, maybe too tight? A little too loose is better than a little too tight.

Chain Lube, do you use any and are you applying it correctly?Nothing like lubing a dirty chain, makes a fine grinding compound.

How are the bearings, you have three and the one on the sprocket side of the cush drive could be finished? Grab the sprocket and try and move it side to side, if you can move it the bearing is finished, replace all three bearing while your there.

Rear Drive axle alignment, if both sprockets are not aligned you will have lots of wear. Some aftermarket sprockets can be install the wrong way. If you are not sure take it to someone who knows.

Grinding Noise

I suspect either you cush drive bearing or primary output shaft bearing (the one the sprocket came from) Check to make sure both are still good

Hope this helps

Tom

ohh, there must be more to chain care when i ever knew:?.
thank you for the detailed reply .

" Chain Lube..." i think my automatic chain lubrication thingy is doing all the damage, it is dropping a few drops of oil on the chain every 3-4 minutes. Did not know this effect.

somehow i can not keep my ride clean, always riding on dirt- and gravel roads. I clean it from time to time.

Today, i installed the new front sprocket and took a closer look at the rear wheel, the cush drive bearing was totaly worn out. The new bearing was only $3.60 at Lordco Auto Parts :D.

I like this bike - so easy to fix.
