Hardwiring a GPS

I purchased a GPS from 640in604 and am now ready to hardwire the power in on my KLR. Can anyone tell me where theypulled the power from? I was thinking of coming right off the battery, but it would probably be hard to cram in another set of spades to the teminal. Also, I am thinking of putting a fuse in line. Has anyone else done this?

I hardwired mine to the battery and I did put a inline fuse in the line. Works well for me.

I can send pictures if you are interested.

The choicesfor hooking up a GPS seem to be a)use the auxiliary power supply witha cigarette-lighter type adapter or b) hardwire directly to battery. From most of the research I've been doing, the latter is recommended. You may findsome useful info aboutthe GPS wiringat this cycoactive link:

Here is a picture of the wires for the GPS attached to the battery. I put in a inline fuse just in case. I then ran the wires along the frame with the wiring harness for the lights and other stuff.

I originally was using a cigarette lighter connection at the handlebars, but I found that vibration was a concern and I would lose power every once in a while. I went and bought a set of connections at C-tire and they worked very well.

I also use a Ram mount which I also found works very well. Hope this helps somewhat.

Great pictures Ken!! That's how I installed my plug for the electric vest!

My GPS takes it power from the accessory outlet supply, but I spliced, soldered, and insulated the wires coming into the outlet rather than use the plug.

Vanmixman, I'm happy to help you get that GPS wired in if you would like to come for a ride outhere one day.

Cheers!

Paul,

That would be great. I will give you a call to set up a time and find out what I ned to bring. I think I should install the AC adaptor at the same time so I have it for future use. Can my system handle an electric vest? I had read a few article about the KLR being limited on extra power consumtion.

Paul,

I ended up wiring the GPS myself. It works great! In the end, I hardwired to the batter with a 3 amp fuse in line. I also installed a 2 wire trailer plug by the touratech mount. This was so I can easily remove the mount and not find it missing from the underground storage the next morning.

Thanks again for the offer to help though.

Paul,

I did not wire in an inverter. I think I have all that I want running off my battery for now. I don't know where I would find the room for it either. It is pretty tight under the seat.
