I hear clicking coming from the general area of the drive sprocket

I was going to do an oil change on my 95 xt350 today and as I was pusshing it into the garage I started hearing a click every now and then, the bike was off so this worried me a bit more than usual.

Hoisting the rear end of the bike off the ground I spun the rear wheel slowly around to my horror the clicking I heard was steady and audible, clicking once every half turn or so. The clicking is coming from the drive sprocket area on the transmission.

It rides fine and runs equally fine, I'm just worried that this click is something really bad.

Please help.

Also, the 10 mm bolts (wtf yamaha) that hold on my skid plate are royally fucked, one came out just fine but the other two are spining freely in the nuts and I can't get them out... should I just cut them off and re-tap them to a bigger size bolt?

Thanks for any help

UPDATE:

The "click" is ONLY coming from the transmission (which shifts and engages perfectly and doesn't slip or anything), so at least it's not the engine.... thanks and praise be to; the gods/god/great spirit/Allah/Budda/Flying Spaghetti Monster and any other deity like beings out there....

Tibarus:

I wouldn't worry about the 'ticking'. Obviously you tried removing the chain to make sure it'snot justthe front sprocket and chain snatching. Also, the transmission gears slide back and forth on the output shaft and of course the output shaft rotates even in neutral. The gearsare looseon the output shaft until the bike is put in gear. All these parts moving is bound to make some noise. My bike clicks too.

I had the same trouble on my Yamaha with the skidplate. The nuts originally were spot-welded to tabs on the frame and they came loose and just rotated with the bolts. I took them off by locking them from above with a log screwdriver while twisting the bolt from below. One I couldn't reach so I pried the bolt head down with the screwdriver (to try and lock the nut) as I turned the wrench. If you have to, an angle grinder will remove the bolt heads in seconds.

To fix it I cleaned the tabs and used JB weld to glue on the nuts. Then I smeared the bolts with grease to stop the JB weld from sticking to the bolt threads....and then tightened them up. After the JBW set..I turned the bolts just to make sure they weren't stuck...they've been fine for a number of years...

*cough* I feel like an idiot.... ^^;

Turns out my chain was just a tad too tight.... *cough*... So yeah... stupid newbie mistake on my part... So much for three years in autoshop... X_x

As for those darn skid plate bolts.... I'm just gonna drill them out and re-tap em for bigger bolts... or just weld up a new mounting system...
