What about a 1982 XT550.

I sold one to a guy here in Kamloops 7 years ago , and I don't think he used it more than one year.

I had modified the front end and installed the forks, wheel and disc brake system from a 1990 CR250. On the rear I midified the rear swing arm to fit the CR250 rear shock..

The bike sat about 3" taller and the suspension R O C K E D !!!

I dont know if the guy wants to sell it or not, but I will find out .

The one problem the bike had was the electronic spark module. The module would 'shut down' some times and after about 1/2 hour you could re-start the engine.

I think the module was like $300 or so ...... so I sold the bike and got into a rail dune-buggy for a few years.

Hi, I'm really interested in what you did the make the cr suspension work on the Xt550. Can you still remember what was involved. thanks

What I did was used the whole front end from the 1990 CR250. Wheel , forks , triple clamps, disc brake and caliper and mastercylinder with the brake line.

The upper steering stem brgs were the same. On the lower the O.D was the same but the I.D was different. The steering stem on the XT was a larger diameter at the bottom (so the XT brg had a larger I.D. than the CR brg)so all I did was make up an adaptor that fit over the lower brg position on rhe CR's steering stem . This spacer had the proper O.D for the XT's original lower brg and allowed me to use the brg that I took out of the XT. When all assembled the front was 3inches higher than stock:tup:

The rear was a little harder. The rear shock on the XT failed ,that was why I did this whole retro-fit. The shock from Yamaha at that time was like $500 or so and buddy sold me the whole front suspension as listed above and the rear shock with spring for $300:dr:

The CR shock was a littlelonger than the XT's rear shock, bout an inch or so I think.

The mount to the frame under the gas tank was the same but the swing arm mount was different .... they werebothl_lshape, (the swing arm and the shock end)ll

I had to make an adaptor that fiton the inside if the swing arm mount and had the proper dimention to fit inside the shock mount. This peice was welded to the swing arm and the other end had a larger hole in it to allow a for apovot point at the shock. I ended up using a wrist pin from a 185ccRotax engine. This pin rotated in the welded adaptor, andwhen the shock bolt was tightened it was tight to the inside of the shock mount. With a grease ftg installed and a couple heavt rubber quad-rings the grease stayed in to keep the moving components good. This adaptor had to be made the proper leingth to make the bike sit level again as the front was 3" higher.

I will try to draw out the adaptor set up and post it.

Thefirst time I tried it out I wastotaly shocked:shock:. I hit a jump kinda fast and got some prety big air. I was expecting a Ker-aak on landing and saw myself getting thrown over the bars!! But when I hit the ground it was sa-weeet:tup:, I think it only used about 3" of total travel and it was verry smooth.

The only prob with the whole thing was the rear spring was too stiff for this set up. The CR had a link setup and the XT was a strait push , a lighter rear spring would have been better.

The other mod I had to do was to the drive chain railer/tensioner( the spring loaded one) I made higher side pads and a new center slider because of the geometry of the rear swing arm to the drive sprocket on the transmission the chain had to be left looser (the distance between the 2 sprockets got greater when the swing arm was lower, when the tire was farther away fron the rear fender)

I rode the bike for 3 years like that and never had a problem with it. Then the kid came allong and I sold the bike:X.

Hope it works out for ya....sorry it took me soo long to reply back to ya:hb:

Any more questions let me know.

Wow, what a great discription! Thanks you so much. I'm definently going to do it. I love the Xt's power and dependability and always thought, " if the suspension was just better"...
