Is my DRZ using/burnning too much oil?

Hi,

I have a 08 Drz400s. I put 31000 kms on it since then. If I fill it with oil to the full line, then ride about 250-275 kms it gets all the way down to the very bottom of the stick or even a bit lower!!!!! I use semi-sinthetic oil. It does not drip anywhere that I can tell.
I'm not sure if this is a lot of oil for this many kms. I have done lots of things to make it go faster and I have pretty much only taken it in for 1 or 2 servicings. Had the valves done at about 4000 km for some reason. If anyone knows of an idea to try to fix this that would be great. Thanks.

Often that leaves the engine operating too rich, what kind of fuel mileage are you getting?

Have you spent the couple of bucks to put the bike on the dyno to make sure the engine is running at peak efficiency?

You know if you are not dripping the oil you are burning it

My experiance with both of my DRZs was absolutly no burning of oil even after a 5000+ km trip through baja

Keep us posted on what you find

This is a lot of oil burning for 250 kms. But at 31000 kms it's possible the bike needs new rings or a rebore. If there are no leaks, check the exhaust end for wet oil after a run. The inside of the exhaust outlet will have black carbon, but it should feel dry with little sign of oily wetness. Also, with this amount of oil burning there should be some sign of blue smoke when the bike is revved.

It's also possible the crankcase breather is allowing oil to be burned, check the air-filter for signs of crankcase oil from the breather. Also check the plug after a run too, for oily deposits. A "leakdown" test with a compressor and adaptor will tell if the compression is okay.

You do know the proper way to check a dry sump oil system? It's supposed to checked about 3 minutes after shutting off, otherwise the oil can leak down into the case.

from cold, idle for three minutes, turn off, let sit for three minutes. Hold the bike vertical and check the oil on the dipstick.
