I am buying a 2002 KLR650 with a Supertrapp Exhaust, K&N Air Filter and Dynojet kit.

I think the exhaust is a good mod, but I have read that the Air filter and jetkit are bad ideas.

Does anyone have this done to their KLR and is it worth it because I am told that you take a hit on mileage and high altitude performance? Should I put it back to stock?

I would appreciate your input and I should be meeting and riding with some of you guys soon if you'll have me!

I have an aftermarket exhaust (can't rember the name, packing blown, straight flow pipe) with a Dyno-jet kit and a K&N filter on my '99. Loved the throttle response. I put the stock can back on and am returning the jetting and probably the filter to stock as well. Not enough performance enhancement to give up the fuel mileage. All the guys I ride with are in stock configuration and I hit reserve ~50 km before they do. By the time they go on reserve, I'm pushing the bike :(. Probably at least 10% better mileage. It's a KLR - you want performance, get something else.;)

Well said yak

I think you'll reach the limits of the stock suspension well before the stock engine.

Gotta love the range of a stock klr:D

Excellent, thanks for the honest response guys. After reading various things on the KLR's, I kind of thought that would be the answer. I am getting the stock exhaust with it and I guess I'll have to figure out how to put it all back to stock after I ride it for a while the way it is. A project for Spring I guess when I havea garage.

Thanks,

ok go ahead and detune it, but at least open up the airbox (I punched 4- 1" holes on top), then reach in the carbatooter and put a dyno jet style(or any other) shim under the needle, great throttle response and mid pull, little fuel sacrifice, wayne

If you have quarter mile times in the back of your mind just after the purchase of a KLR650, then you just bought the wrong bike. From what I've seen since 02, 90% of riders that I've come across, don't need anything more than a stock bike in terms of performance. Sure, there are a few sensible mods that really should be made, but all in all a stock bike will do it all, ( excluding tires). I've listened to riders recently talking about certain mods and quite frankly it's a joke. In terms of performance, the general concensus is that the progressive fork springs and tiresare a good investment. However I would leave the engine and filterwell alone.Anyone thinking of mods on a recently purchased KLR650 should concentrate on body armour, eg rad/res guard, bark busters, bash plate. There are a few others that come to mind like serrated footpgs, gear shifter, rear brake and braided lines, but some of thoseare maybe questionable. Even the rear shock should be tweaked to suite the owner ( preload and rebound ) which seems to be a rare occurance.Of course, after all this, nothing happens unless you get in the trails andhave the right tires on.
