KLR screwing

Hi dirty riders, how often does every one adjust the counter-balancer tension lock screw on their KLRs? Leon:?

I am assuming you are talking about the screw underneath the rubber plug by the shifter that adjusts the infamous "doohickey"...

I would adjust this every oil change or every other oil change. I lean the bike to the left, opposite way of side stand as that is supposed to allow it to adjust better, also only back off the screw half a turn and don't over torque the screw, 72in-lb I think. I think this part is chronically over adjusted by riders which could be a cause of some of the problems, mind you my spring was broke at 7K and was I had only adjusted it once or twice..

I adjust mine every oil change. Just like Matty says, lean the bike away from the stand. Mine was not over torqued, but when I replaced it it sure looked like it had been - I think they use the metal from recycled DR 650s to make the Doohickey from:D

I only take about an hour to replace it, so "Do the Doo" and relax.

I adjust mine the same as said above. I had to replace my "doohickey" as well. My spring was broken and the balancer adjustment plate was badly worn. Don't over tighten the adjustment bolt!

This is my oil screen full of gasket sealant and rubber chunks. I'm sure it must have restricted oil flow.

The piece of metal is part of my spring for the adjustment lever.

The bike ran a lot smoother and quieter after the job was done.

The doohickey spring breaking is so common as to be almost universal. The oil pick-up screen in your photo looks like it had the usual amount of stuff. I've seen one with more than twice that amount and 50,000 km so it doesn't seem like the screen is easly blocked.

The KLR650 runs low oil pressure, around 7 1/2 PSI at 3,000 RPM hot but will have above 60 PSI when cold. There has been some interesting discussion on the Yahoo KLR650 group regarding oil pressure if you're technically inclined but there are no reported problems with KLR engine oiling.

FWIW

Good web posting from Multisurface Motorcycling on Doohickey replacement and/or adjustment.

http://multisurfacemotorcycling.com/klrpage/leveradj/leveradj_p1.htm

Also check out the related "experiment" that the guys did on the amount of torque that the ballancer adjuster bolt should be tightened to....pretty narrow window of opportunity to prevent damage to the Doohickey.

http://multisurfacemotorcycling.com/klrpage/lever/torque.htm

Makes you wonder how much of the Doohickey Disaster is our own fault if the damage is caused during good faith adjustment procedures as part of routine maintenance! :shock:Nonetheless, it would be nice if Kawasaki would just get on board and upgrade the @#$%^ part!
