klr650 handguards

Hey folks

I'm wanting to install some hand guards on my 2003 klr650, I'm wondering what make and model others are using? Is their anything that just bolts on or does this require modifications?

I've got the moose and I'm pretty happy with them. I've dumped my bike SEVERAL times and they've held up very nicely. Think I paid about $100 with the rubbery deflectors. They pretty much just bolt on, other than cutting holes in the end of your grips and moving your mirrors or controls around a bitand you'll have to cut off the end of your throttle sleeve. Pretty quick and easy though, should take maybe 20-30 minutes. The biggest gripe with mine, is that the adapters should be more adjustable so you can get them at just the right angle. When you tighten everything up there's pretty much just one angle they want to live at.

The onlysuggestion that I wished I had paid attention to from a friend was to add some heated grips while you are considering this step. In my case I boughtthe plastic Acerbis units, including the extra wind deflectors for about $125.00. Since I replaced my grips at the same time, I would have appreciated the heated grips, particularly on my ride back from Comox today. That's my two cents worth on the topic.

I have the MSR ones. I think they are made by the same people that make the Moose ones and my experience is the same as Tash. Easy to put on, only one position and tough.

You can get the Acerbis Multiplo through the DSBC Store, I ride with these on my DRZ

Note the curve of the mount, this is to allow your hand to get out from behind the guard when you fall. I had these on my DR650 up McNutt had a nice get off and the hand-guards did their job with out bending or moving, I was very happy compared to the Rally Dualsport. The Plastic "Touring" is very large and keeps your hands dry in wet weather. EZ to mount LED turnsignals as well.

Retails for 126.00 plus you need mounts about 30.00

I prefer the Emgo guards because they will accomodate the original KLR plastic hand guards. The KLR hand guards keep more water off my hands than most of the lever protectors I've seen. They also cost about $40 which is 1/2 of many.

Add my vote to the Acerbis Multiplo handguards.....easy to mount and they provide plenty of space for brake and clutch levers.

I'm using the Enduro plastic during the summer and will get the Touring plastic for the fall rides. I think the replacement plastic is only about $16.00.:clap:

Ok. So we can buy Moose guards, Tusk guards, Maier guards, MSR guards, Acerbis guards, Studebaker guards etc at any US offroad store. But think I can find anything to fit my KLR here in BC? All I get is blank looks when I ask the dealers?? ANY ATV/Offroad supply in Canada sell this stuff at a reasonable price? (Sorry if this has been answered but I searched and could not find anything...)

Burnaby Kawi's got a pair of black Emgo's and a couple of different Acerebis models as well. Any shop that sells dirt bikes should have a good supply. I went with the Emgo's just cause they're cheap, strong and like Norm said if I want to drill a couple holes in them I can bolt my original guards on for a little extra rain protection.

I just installed the Acerbis Multiconcept enduro guards on my KLR. I've ordered the touring plastics for them (larger deflectors) for the cooler part of the season, then will be putting the enduros back on when days stay warm. I found though, I had to do some minor bending on the inner end of the arm where it secures to the inner bracket (pics avail if desired). Holeshot in Langley has the handguards - $89 for the guards (aluminum bar and deflector) and $40 for the mounting kit. $20 for the Touring deflectors. Also I found to keep the throttle grip from binding, I had to drill the hole a bit bigger (ie: 5/8" hole for the 1/2" dia expander) on the grip.

My bike isn't insured for the road yet - will be doing so the week before the noob ride in March. (I live in Abbotsford), otherwise I'd take you up on your coffee offer (I'm off Thurs-Sat).

Thanks guys. I see the Tusk guards ($30 US) look like the ticket for me as I fall over a lot (!) but its not really price so much (I want to shop in Canada) it is just the lack of selection here for DualSport gear compared to the US...I like to shop online while downing a beer and have bought a lot of stuff online in the US because that is where all my online searches always seem to lead to! Clothing selection has got to be the big one for sure..I ordered all my stuff from New Enough and Motorcycle Closeouts after having a such tough time finding stuff I liked here...so there goes CDN $$$ down south...I am sure some of you have found the same thing? Oh well, enough whining and time to go riding! (GO AWAY SNOW!) I will check out some of your tips. Thanks again...
