Hey kiwiboy how many hours on the bike? I'm thinking of rebuilding mine this winter, so I will be following this thread closely!

The 530 is notorious for using oil, right from day one mine would use a couple of cc's of oil after a long hot ride! I would do a compression test before tearing it down, you might get another season out of it! mine has 220hrs on it now!

120 HRS and 4300 KM ouch I was unhappy with my 340Hrs and like 17000km :) Like Nerrad said I would have a compression test done I really don't think you need a rebuild yet on bike.

Yea but I'm planning doing an Alaskan run next summer 8000kms round trip. That one reason why I want to do it. A lot of my riding as been hard nuts and in mud I did lots of riding in the Yukon and it's all sand there .not much on road at all. It puffs a lot of smoke on revs. I thought it might be my valve seals. Have yet to do a leak down test but going to look into that as o have to source the kit? . Oh if any ones keen on the Yukon Alaska trip pm me your deets as I have a route planned I'm going to put that trip on here in the next coming weeks.. More the better..

8,000km round trip on a 530EXC? I love mine, but that sounds horrible.

I have 250 hrs, 10,000km on mine. No top end yet and it doesn't burn oil.

Kiwiboy, do you still have the crankcase/valve cover breather routed into the air box? It is how the bike came stock. If so you will periodically suck a touch of oil into the carb and get a puff of blue smoke. Especially after a wipeout or when shutting the bike down hot. It's not an issue and there is no point to change the hose routing. Just be aware. In fact double check the hoses anyways, they have a tendency of falling against the exhaust pipe and melting.

And a compression test is virtually useless on this engine with out deactivating the cam decompression assembly. The only true reading of the engines health is via a leak down test.

I may be a bit of a boy scout type of thinker, but i'm happy to put a complete top end and pay the price on any of my bikes at the 200 hr mark. my 525 exc gets a piston and rings, valves checked and changed as required( you can suck a bit of sand or dust and ruin a valve or 2 in just one ride),new cam chain, cam shaft bearings, valve seals and guides, water pumps seals and bearings all as preventive maintenance. I have rarely had a bike/engine fail on me, and i ride them not hard but spirited and often.
my 2 stroke/smoke 300 gasgas bush bike gets the same treatment as my dualsporter. 200hr's, strip it and throw away pretty much anything that moves and rubs in the engine. when you have a 500 cc or less engine that is putting out 50 or so horsepower, bringing a grin to your face every time you whack the throttle ,lady's and gents there is a price to be paid for that much fun. if it feels like that's not what you want to do, maybe a 650 26 horsepower klr is right for you?

sorry forgot to answer the OP's question, i've always used OEM ktm pistons and rings, but I only ask them to do 200 hr's for me. I've measured my ring end gap which should be approx 16 thousands on a 4 inch bore diameter, and after 200 hrs it's in the 35 thou range. after 350 to 400 hr's ( mr resistors 400 ktm that we just converted to a 453 ) had almost 50 thou of end gap.

OK, back to the Op's origional question. Wossner seems to be the preferred brand.

I've got an 09 450, basicly same engine as your 530. I was a lucky one who got an official KTM oil burner, from day one it used a lot of oil. KTM replaced the origional piston and rings at 20Hrs for a small improvement. Just short of 200Hrs it wouldn't run? Turns out it had a broken compression ring.

I took the jug and head to Dave Hopkins ( DJH on KTM Talk ) and he installed a Wossner piston and rings. The cylinder didn't even get honed, just cleaned and measured, rings gaped and done. The head got cleaned up as it was nasty from the oil consumption and new valve seals installed.

This was the BEST thing that I have done to this bike, I'm now at 400Hrs and 17000Km. I never add oil between oil changes, the plug looks perfect, the bike starts and runs great. I'm expecting another 200Hrs before I take it down again. ( I hope ! ) This cost me a wopping $600.00!

It's an easy job well worth the piece of mind that it will give you. Just like Ried says, his piece of mind comes at 200Hrs.

All the mods are done I'm a mechanic by trade so I creed in you could say.. Lol.. This bike is modded out all the best fruit installed. The smoke is not a big deal but I'm anal on it. All the hoses are sweet and routed right. It's rings for sure.. It's the Oem piston and rings

I wouldn't be worried about my ass, there are just better bikes suited to this style of riding. 690, 990, 1190, 1150GSA, KLR, etc.

i have owned a BMW 1150GSA and it was comfortable for 500km stints without getting out of the seat. and I didn't have to change the oil everyday!

More power to you, just wouldn't be my first choice.

All good no sore arse for me Corbins concepts sorted that.. I no doubt it will be a long ride but I have well over a thousand kms of dirt roads planned. And 600kms of travel from dease Lake to telisn Lake though the old man pass road it's a local trail . The klr wouldn't do it nor the BMW as to heavy.yuur arms would get sore picking them up on the trail. I have owned the ktm 530 from brand new it's a wicked all round machine. The 690 is nice but heavy for the hills and mountain passes. I lived in the Yukon for years and the 530 is the rock for it.. Out of my trip planned I only cover 30kms of the same road twice..

Arr I'm not old stuff the klr.. I like fast bikes and fast women, not slow bikes and old women

So I'm guessing Wossner is the preferred for an 08 450EXCR?
mine is reaching 200 hrs / 11000kms since new on the bike with original piston. My bike, knock on wood, has not suffered from the typical 2008 issues that plague many, but then it has lead a relatively easy life, with more pavement commuting than dirt work unfortunately.
