Lowering KLR 650

Good Day
My wife wants to sell her street bike and try dual sport. My question is with all of the after market kits available, can I realistically lower the bike enough to fit her 5'3 frame? I was thinking of lowering my 03 KLR for her and picking up a new one for myself.

You can probably lower it an inch and a half, maybe 2 inches, at a cost of reduced suspension travel of the same amount. Slide the fork tubes up in the triple clamp by an equivalent amount. You can also cut down the seat foam to further reduce the seat height - see Lee at the Recovery Room Upholstery at the bottom of Fox Mountain Road to see how much height that will shave off. It is probably doable if she is strong enough to handle itwithout flat footing.

Thanks for the info.
I ended up getting my wife a Sherpa 250 yesterday and so far she is really enjoying it. It is very light weight and a good way for her to build up her confidence.

Good call...the KLR's a lot of bike for most riders (except for us exceptional few), let alone those with a 5'3 profile. ;)

Good Choice!!! If I was smaller, I would have a Super Sherpa. Nice little bike!!! At between 5'7" & 5'8" I ride a 1-1/2" lowered KLR and it goes pretty well. I also have an XT225 to learn dirt on. I can't imagine 5'3" on a KLR650!!!
