Melting Plastic!!!

I have just installed a new rear fender on my WR450 and noticed on the right side were the plastic slides in between the exhaust and the frame it started to melt when I road it around the block. What have some of you done to prevent this? The old fender looked like it had melted at some point too. It also had some sort of heat shield on it. I have looked around for some of this material and no one seems to have it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey JP,

I went and checked mine and there is no indication of burning. My heat insulation is intact. I ran my bike pretty hard in the summer as well, maybe you are running too hot? maybe lean? An alternative to the stock insulation would be silicone mat that cooks use. You can buy these at Canadian tire and cut a piece to fit and fasten with rivets, plastic rivets if you have them.

My old fender had the heat tape still intact. The new fender didn’t have the heat tape. Some guys have told me I can get heat tape from a hardware store that I can just stick on. The bike is running a little lean so that isn’t helping. I will be adjusting the jetting this winter.

I have really had trouble finding any "heat tape" like the factory stuff except as a factory part. I ended up using "header tape" wrapped around the pipe and it works good. You can get the skinny motorcycle header tape at Lordco for about 20 bucks a roll.
