Need help with rear shock adjustment problem....

Hi there I just purchased a '87 KLR and I tried to adjust the rear spring to stiffen it up as I was loaded up for a one week trip. Its set on #2 and when I put the wrench on, it started to turn and then it just resets to 1 again. I can't seem to get it past the #2 setting.

Is my adjustment pooched, any suggestions/options....?

I read somewhere that the preload adjuster strips pretty easy. Very flimsy design. I bet someone in this forum will know a quick fix.
