Oil Ring Procedure (New Top End)

Just checking the ring end gaps and found the oil ring expander is a little large and not fitting right,
what's the procedure here ? do I bend the ends, cut a section off ? also which way do the ends face
when installed, up or down ? thanks in advance, off to google this.

Found a really good piece on rings, it's a racing application not sure if it applies to a dirtbike engine.

Here you go Sparkle, the engine fired up first try, smoked for about 5 minutes until it sealed up and now it's running awesome, just gotta do another valve adjustment this spring and a compression check, happy riding !
