Revving Issue

I had the old DR600 out this weekend and it started to do something strange.

After riding the bike, and things seemed fine, when I stopped and sat with the engine idleing, it would start to rev up. No, I wasn't pulling the throttle or twisting the bars. It was kind of strange.

Any ideas what might cause this?

I haven't pulled the carb apart yet, as it seems like some sort of vaccum issue or something like that.

Increased revs at idle can be cause by a weakening of the fuel mixture such as running low on fuel, blocked pilot jet or even a leaking manifold. Almost certainly a fuel issue tho so look to the carb.

Try describing the circumstances and symptoms as precisely as possible and you may get some other suggestions.

It seems to occur if the engine is running hot. For example, riding a trail yesterday, lots of up and down, lots of clutch work, when I would pull the clutch in at a stop, it would start revving up. Only way to bring it back down was to release the clutch a little and bog the engine down. (Not a good solution for the clutch or the bike I'm sure)

I think I'll have to take a look at the carb like you said.

Hey man good to hear that you are out riding. I finally got mine out of the garage so I am back on the forum.

I had the same problem when I had that bike. My solution was to play with the idle knob when it was hot. How much more RPM were you getting over idle? Perhaps there is a kink in the throttle cable somewhere. Air filter boot off somewhere maybe.

I am wondering if the jetting might have to change since you are now a coastal guy and riding at 0-2000 feet instead of 5000-9000? Your bike would be sucking in a lot more O2 down there. That bike is fairly old school so it might now adapt to change as well.



A little gas line antifreeze sometimes can fix all sorts of problems that seem totally unrelated.

The best solution I can think of would be to go out and buy that new DR650 that you have been threatening to get. I hear they are making new ones every day!!!!Just add money.

You don't want a certain mining engineer we know showing you up in a couple of months;)

How high do the revs climb to.



Most bikes idle a LOT fater hot, than they do cool.
