Sidecar Help Please

Hi Gang,

I'm getting ready to put a sidecar on my wife's '06 F650GS and I'm looking for some information.

The sidecar is a Cozy Rocket, and the dealer says the installer is going to charge well over a twelve hundred dollars for the setup. I don't mind paying fairly for labor and specialists to get things done, but this feels out of line.

Does anyone know if this bike has any special needs for installing a lightweight hack - like fabricating mount points etc?

Also, can anyone recommend an installer in the lower mainland?

I'm sure I manage to do the install on my own if it's just bolt-ups but I have no way to fabricate special parts if this bike is fussy that way.

Any input and advice will be appreciated.

Welcome to the world of sidecars.I had a Dmc Enduro car mounted on my klr and it was a hoot. The Cozy hacks come with universal mounts. Pictures on the net show that the bike doesn't have a conventional basket type frame so it will need a lower sub frame fabricated for the bottom mounts. That would explain part of the large cost. Dmc quoted me $800 for mounting and setup of their sidecar to my 01 Bonneville using their bike specific mounts. They also sell a set of mounts made specifically for your bike for $650 so your quote is not far off.

After considerable shopping, we have elected to buy from DMC, a complete bolt up rig, car and all. Jay at DMC is great to deal with. Hopefully we will have it all in hand in a few weeks, and the missus can start learning to drive her hack! I'll be keeping to my KLR for now

Cool ,what car are you going with? Dmc has been a good place to deal with for me also. An excellent read is the book "Driving a sidecar outfit" also available from Dmc.

Jay is selling us a used Kenna single, on a new frame. The car is quite a bit older, but my buddy is a first class painter......

Estimating 3 weeks or so to fabricate the mounting kit. I'll look for that book.

Once she gets the hang of it, the dog will become ballast Now we need some doggles. J.

Thanks Dan, the Kamloops guys look pretty good. I've already commited to DMC and paid the deposit so there is no further shopping allowed... DMC came with lots of reccomendations from all over the US and Canada, and he happened to have a used one in stock at exactly our price limit! Couldn't let it slip away.

I believe that labour is fairly extensive no matter what setup. They might be able to give you an estimate of what it would cost for reference though.
