stator - pickup coil rewind?

Hi all,.

I am looking for some information about what to do with a pickup coil that is far out of spec.

I just discovered that one of my two pulser (pickup) coils are fried. My 83 xt550 has an unusual dual pickup system that is inherently part of the whole stator setup. this means that to replace the pickup coil I have to replace the entire stator / pickup / wiring etc. And alas, this is a very expensive endeavor these days - bike bandit wants $500 - there are some on ebay but they look worse than mine and are $150.

Does anyone have any experience with somehow rebuilding these things or replacing just the broken pickup coil with an aftermarket one? I would have tried myself but on this one they are all sealed up in a little black box. is there some way to bust these open, rewire and then epoxy back together?

or better yet .... does anyone out there have a spare they want to sell me?
I think the stator from the xt600 will work as well, looks almost identical although i think the pickup coil mount may need a small mod to fit correctly .

I really don't want to start firing dollars into ebay seller's pockets who are too lazy to send me ohm reading for their parts.

any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

cheers.

Hi WCR:

OTG's suggestion might be worth a phone call to see if the pickup is included....this would be the best solution.

XT550/600 were notorious for the unreliable ignition. Most parts bikes are parked because of this same problem.

Using a pickup coil from another type of bike is not an option because of the dual pickup aspect. The two pickups provided for a retarded starting and idling spark timing and 12 degrees advance for running and rewinding would be almost impossible without a lot of time and bucks. You might investigate a conversion kit from Boyer Bransen or some other aftermarket ignition kits.

Using an XT600 pickup is possible and I copied this from somewhere:

Until 1989, CDI of the XT600 models:
34L/55W/43F/3AJ/1VJ/3UW/59X/3SW/36A/5Y1/5Y3/2KF/2NF/3TB(kickstart only),
those of XT550(electrically compatible but not the same advance curve!)/SRX600/TT600 are fonctionnaly compatibles, although connectors could be differents, wiring and colors are differents with sometimes 2 or 3 wires more:
Blue: connected to ground when neutral
blue/yellow: connected to ground when sidestand open
blue-sky: wire to neutral lamp:

If I was gonna fix it I'd take may chances on this one on ebay:

It might not look pretty, but how it works is the thing.

OTG, thanks - i sent the rmstator guys an email to see if they could help me out - I came accross that site before but couldn't find my pickup there. maybe I can get them to custom me up something.

Sparkle - great info about xt compatibility - and ... I also caved for a Ebay part for now. I was able to get one dude on the phone who would stick an ohm meter on his part for me. I think this will get me going again for now. Not sure I like the long term reliability of an old ebay part so I'm still researching further. I would like to have a back up on me for long bush trips. I will also look into a better aftermarket option.

Other interesting things I found out was that http://kedo.de will actually repair the pulser coil for you. Although it requires you sending the thing to them and you need some friend in europe that can be a middle man for you as they do not ship to North america. - Anyway 109 Euro for a repair plus shipping both ways - not a bad option. their part number for this service is DL77 if anyone else is interested.

Thanks guys - hope the xt is running again next week. days like yesterday made it hurt to have it up on blocks.
