SUZUKI DR200

hi guys, im new to this forum... stumbled upon this website while browsing and i got a few questions to ask regarding my dr200.. its a 1994 dr200.. i will always have problems in starting it up in the morning.. it hasa push start only so its quite troublesome for mebecause in the endi have to jump start it... went around asking about this problem and were told that maybe the starter is a bit clogged... some even said that maybe theres a problem with my gear coz whenever i tried to start my bike it feels as though the gear slips out and hasa bit of a difficulty going back in.. right now im thinking of changing my starter, or maybe install a kickstart..was told that jumpstarting has the same basic principle as kickstarting.. dunnoe whether its a fact or otherwise.. i guess this is a bit long winded post but im still a rookie, juz wanna ask u experts about this... thanks guys!

WRT your starting question, if no-one responds withinfo that helps, as it is a smaller site with relatively few members, try a couple of other sites, http://www.thumpertalk.com, orhttp://www.maximum-suzuki.com and check out the DR specific forums for help.

Not saying that you won't get what you need from someone on this site, but just letting you know that there are some other resources out there ifwe can't help.

Its tricky to get help over the net unless someone else has experienced the same problem with the same bike, or is a mechanic who has experience with your model.

If you can, get a factory service manual or at least a Clymer one, it will help you figure out a lot.

The first thing I'd look at would be the condition of the battery. Although the battery runs the bike and lights okay, if it isn't in perfect condition it may not have the zip to spin the starter hard enough to make full engagement with the motor gear.

The starter spins and the spinning throws the starter gear into engagement with the engine gear. So the other possibility is that eventually the small starter pinion can wear downenough that it won't always engage. Make sure the starter shaft is clean and lubricated. Dirt or rust could keep it from moving freely. This should be an easy fix but requires removing the starter motor to clean the shaftor replacethe pinion gear.

I'd try a new fully charged battery first, or if you're careful jumper the battery connections with a known good battery to test. It might save you taking it apart.

Hey Farzy:

Just had the same problems you are encountering.

Charged battery the night before, the battery charger charge light was on, next morning bike would not turn over.

Bump started the bike, rode for about an hour,figured the battery should be charged now. Went to go for another ride, bike would not start, not even a click.

Took the battery to get replaced, buddy stated the battery is fine just needs to be charged, he charged the battery and it lasted for two starts.

Replaced the battery and all is fine.

thanks for the input guys! im gonna remove the starter motor n give it a good scrubbing.. will update u guys again..
