Not to hijack your thread John, but was that the extent of the damage? I expected you to have ended up with a couple of scratches or maybe a dent.

A number of different ways - all involve mounting the plate higher than stock. Many of us drill another hole in the middle (roughly) of the plate and mount it as high up under the licence plate light as it will go. Then bend the lower edge out away from those knobbies!
I bought my KLR second hand and it had lost the plate and a good portion of the inner fender. Easy fix though. One thing to be away of is that vibration, (yes even something as smooth as a KLR!), will eat the plate. When you remount it, use rubber backing on both sides.

Now I must say, losing the plate is a rookie KLR mistake, you definitely need to spend an afternoon at the computer, Google 'KLR', and learn all the little secrets.

Many riders actually do away with the black inner fender altogether. I just mounted mine using the lower holes on the plate so that it tucks up high under the rear (outer) fender, and find that it's safe enough up there. Caution: you lose your plate light up there. Some LEO's have been know to get nit-picky about unlighted plates.

I have a solution that worked quite well on my KLR
All you need is 2 of those brass brackets for lighting fixtures. The ones used for ceiling or wall mount lighting. Not sure of the actual name used. They are about 1/4"x 4" in size. You will recognize it from the picture.
The other thing you need is 4 screws ( I used flat recessed ones for the middle 2) and 4 locking nuts.
The attached picture will explain the rest.
