I've decided on soft luggage for the KLR over the hard box paniers and frames available from Touratech and places like that. It's more than I need for now.

Can anyone recommend a good, waterproof, durable set of saddle bags that you can simply lay over the saddle and clip on and off without the added hastle of frames etc?

Don't get the wolfman then. Not waterproof although I think they have waterproof now but they are yellow. Make sure you get an exhaust guard so you don't burn the bag. And on the left side the bag will curl under the back fender so watch the tire. You don't want it to swing into it.

Also keep all food out of soft luggage. I have a set of squirell eaten wolfman side panniers.

I heard one guy mention dog panniers as they are cheap. Yes, panniers for large travel dogs. They go over the dogs back and work for motorcycles. I wouldn't buy expensive soft bags anymore as they just don't stand up to the terrain and you can realize after a couple rides that they just don't work good.

Some guys buy bicycle panniers too.

There are some great waterproof and durable soft luggage. The Ortleibs are among the best. Information on them can be found at the manufacturers website here

who sell mainly bicycle stuff but I bought my set through them.

The bags have proven to be very strong and completely waterproof. though as mentioned earlier you will NEED a rack or at minimum an exhaust guard to keep from melting them on your exhaust.

I use a rack as I also have a set of hard luggage from Happy Trails. I use the soft luggage where weight is a concern and the hard stuff everywhere else.

was the best $30 I ever spent. I use Joe Rocket saddlebags on my bike which aren't waterproof (but come with plastic waterproof covers) and expand enough to fit in enough gear for a 2-3 day trip. They aren't big enough for any substantial expedition, but for a quick camping trip, or a run around town, they're great.

I reccomend 100%Waterproof Hobo Luggage

Pack your stuff in ziplocks and put the ziplocks into easy to carry garbage bags.This works with any Ballistic Nylon saddle bag. I used the Oxford saddlebags with pretty good result, they lasted for several crashes before ripping apart totally.

I have the yellow wolfman bags on my KTM currently which are good, and pretty durable. I have a little guard over the pipe, but other than that they just strap down.

I might look at something smaller like the dirt bagz this year (must add the little hoops for them.)

I have Joe Rocket, and like the guys said, I put my gear in ziplocs, and then in G-bags. Nothing has gotten wet. I've got a 35L tube drybag for the tent and sleeping bags (summer weight), and my tank bag.

Held enough stuff for me and the girlfriend for 4 days, no food or stove, but for a weekend, it'd be too easy. I've seen the Hardcases, and unless you're planning a HUGE trip, I don't think they'd be worth the HUGE money. Plus, the bags are more tha enough for just you on a weekend total camping trip. Tons of room, and expandble

Plus, you could probably use some friendly connection at SG to get a deal.......

Speaking of tank bags. I switched to a small magnetic bag as my wolfan explorer gets in the way when I stand up. If anyone wants to offer me a 24 pack of quality ale, I might be willing to part with it. That's if your interested in it for yourself. And no, I won't deliver.
