Upper Chain roller?

I have heard about upper chain roller breaking off of DR 650's leaving a hole in the frame. Alot of people seem to think it is ok to remove it all together and just plug the bolt hole. Has anybody here done this to there DR?
My roller has some chain marks on it, but there still seems to be lots of room for the chain to move up without touching anything if it wasn't there. Any comments?

I just installed new sprockets and a chain.

I was looking at that roller . I have 35,000km on mine and there is nothing wrong with it.

I think people that have these types of drive trainproblems do not keep their chains or suspension adjusted properly.

If the chain is too loose and stretched in one spot the chain will 'slap'or bounce up and down. Add to this an un-adjusted rear suspension and you have the makings of a roller failure.

The rear spring on the DR650 is prety lame. Every year I have to pre-load it about 1/2 inch more or the sucker will sag soo much that the cain will almost constantly be in contact with the roller. If I ride 2-up it will always be on the roller.

I also pump up the rear shock pressure to 220psi. Next year I will need to get a new rear spring, this one doesn't have much left.

Maintain your bike and all the installed components will do what they were designed to do .

I've got my spring all the way compressed.
How can you tell what the spring is rated for. Mine's so old there are no markings on it.

I emailed Jesse at Kientech Eng. and he said to leave it on. I am going to buy 2 new high qualityones to keep the noise down. Cheers Roscoe:hb:

Lots of people over on Thumpertalk remove the upper chain roller with, apparently, no ill effects. They then fill the hole with JB Weld or some such thing. I replaced my lower one and will probably remove the top one.

I have just put on a Moose bearing top roller. Very impressed. Why didnt I do it earlier. Put up with 6+ yrs of slapping knocking etc. The stock bushing is useless.

I run a fairly loose chain but still notice grooves already. I'd agree that the geometry is weird.If the chain on top is tight when accelerating it will spin the roller. I have almost gone off the road researching this.Still it has all but eliminated the "noise" down there. Peace and quiet.
