Valve Clearances

I checked my valve clearances on my '99 KLR at 33,690 Kms. The intake was 0.0045 inches (left) and 0.005 inches (right), spec is 0.004 to 0.008. The exhaust was 0.007 (left and right), spec is 0.006 to 0.010.

So they are within spec, but toward the tight end of the range. So, given the mileage on the bike, can I expect them to remain fairly close, ie. tighten up, but very slowly? What sort of rate of change can I expect?

Thanks.

I've checked mine 3x, and at 32k am gonna do it again , as I pushed it pretty hard on my holiday playing tag with a coupleof sport bikes . On my first check @ 1000k one intake (? might've been exhaust I ferget)was just out of spec, wide (too much gap), easy shim change, after my epic northern trip around 26k I changed another one, moral to the story, tighter tolerances = more open valves=more power. I've heard that the clearances decrease with age, but that sounds odd to me? you'd thimk the gap would increase? hmm, it's like the more beer I drink, the fuller the glass gets, wierd but O.K. :} just check em in onother 12k, then you'll know.

Did mine today after like 30,000km (yeah I know!! but the bike needed a wash as well). All 4 clearances were stangely enough exactly the same 0.080 mm.

Went from 280 on the exhaust and 255 on the intake to

265and245.

Hence, if somebody needs 280's and/or 255' I have'em

Always check the clearances as per manual intervals. Valve clearances that use the bucket and shim type (KLR) will always tighten up. A clearance that is too tight is not a good thing as it will eventually lead to a burnt out valve. I set mine to the higher end of the tolerance, knowing thatthey will tighten up as the klms go by. :ted:
